DULUTH, Minn. – Mary Goodwin was at it again, this time smashing the program record by over 57 seconds in the 5,000-meter. That helped highlight a strong showing for the Bemidji State University Track and Field team as the Beavers won seven events in total at the Lake Superior Challenge on Saturday.
Goodwin crossed with a time of 18:00.29 to blow away the previous record of 18:57.72 that was set back in 1991. In addition to that highlight, the Beavers added event wins from Josie Aitken, Carol Miller, Natalie Fultz, Abbie Disbrow (twice) and the 4x400 relay.
Goodwin cruised to the win in the 5,000-meter by over 45 seconds. Aitken added the win in the 400-meter crossing with a time of 1:01.92. Carol Miller cruised to the win in the 1,000-meter posting at time of 3:18.93. Nadia Vaughn also competed in the 1,000-meter and placed second with a time of 3:28.51. Fultz collected the win in the high jump clearing 5-00.25. Disbrow won the long jump with a distance of 16-9.75 and then added the win in the triple jump at 32-10.25. Fultz also competed in the long jump reaching 16-8.75 to place second. Miller and Disbrow (long jump) each hit personal-best numbers.
Mikenna Pattrin had a pair of runner-up places in the shot put and the weight throw. She had a throw of 38-4.25 in the shot put and then added a throw of 50-9.25 in the weight throw. Hannah Baker placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 34-3.00. She also competed in the weight throw hitting 39-4.50. Cassidy Schmidt placed fifth in the shot put (33-1.00) and eighth in the weight throw (38-1.50). Emma Erickson came in fifth in the weight throw (46-0.50) and sixth in the shot put (32-7). Zayda Priebe hit a mark of 30-5 to place seventh in the shot put. Fultz placed eighth with a throw of 30-0.75 in the shot put and Zoe Lennon competed in both placing ninth in the shot put (28-7.75) and 12th in the weight throw (28-0.75). Baker, Schmidt and Lennon all hit personal-best marks in the shot put, while Erickson added a PR in the weight throw.
Abby Syverson placed second in both the 60-meter with a new PR time of 8.29. She then came in runner-up in the 200-meter with a time of 27.17.
Gabrielle Wilson hit a PR in the 60-meter hurdles placing fourth with a time of 11.82.
Maggie McCarthy came in runner-up in the 800-meter with a time of 2:31.32.
Carmen Lyon led three Beavers in the mile coming in fifth with a time of 5:55.57. Hadley Stuehrenberg placed eighth (6:07.14) and Sydnie Price in ninth (6:07.65). All three collected PR times.
The Beavers also had two relay teams compete in the 4x400. The first group of Fultz, Syverson, Aitken and Makenna Frazier placed first with a time of 4:12.95. The second group of Miller, McCarthy, Vaughn and Lyon came in second with a time of 4:34.95.
Bemidji State will have a split squad trip coming up this week competing in the SDSU Indoor Challenge and the Maverick Premier #1 and #2 on Friday and Saturday.
