Box Score WINONA, Minn. – Bemidji State University Women's Basketball fell to Winona State University, 75-57, on Saturday at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minn.
In the first quarter, Bemidji State started strong with
Janette Hanni scoring the initial six points, including a layup at 8:24, helping the team to an early lead.
Rachel Koenig contributed with a defensive rebound and layup, maintaining the team's momentum. Despite their solid start, the Warriors tied the game at 6 with Olivia Gamoke's 3-pointer at 4:21 and later took a brief lead.
Erin Barrette's jumper at 1:16 helped Bemidji State tie the game at 10, but Winona State managed to finish the quarter slightly ahead, leading 12-10.
In the second quarter, Bemidji State started strong with
Tieryn Plasch scoring a 3-pointer at the 9:45 mark, assisted by
Erin Barrette. Barrette continued to contribute with a 3-pointer of her own and multiple assists, including one to
Ashlynne Guenther for a quick three-point play, narrowing the score to 24-21. However, despite a late 3-pointer by Plasch and a layup from Barrette, Bemidji State faced challenges as they committed several turnovers and fouls, allowing Winona State to extend their lead to 39-26 by the end of the quarter.
In the third quarter, WSU opened with a series of 3-pointers, including two from Vivica Bretton, to extend their lead. Despite an early scoring surge from the home team,
Rachel Koenig responded with two layups for Bemidji State, narrowing the gap slightly. Barrette contributed with successful free throws and a 3-pointer at 1:30, and Hanni added a free throw to bring Bemidji State's score up to 16 for the quarter. Although Bemidji State managed to capitalize on some Winona State turnovers, the home team's consistent shooting kept them ahead, ending the quarter with a 59-42 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Bemidji State showed a strong defensive effort with
Ashlynne Guenther recording three blocks, including two early in the quarter.
Brooke Theis contributed with back-to-back layups at the 7:30 and 6:15 marks, assisted by Hanni, adding to their scoring run. Despite a late surge by Bemidji State, Winona State maintained their lead, securing a 16-15 advantage in the final quarter, resulting in a 75-57 victory for Winona State.
Erin Barrette emerged as a key player for Bemidji State, contributing significantly with 12 points and leading the team with 5 assists. Guenther also made a strong impact with her defensive prowess, recording 4 blocks and adding 8 points and 4 rebounds.
Tieryn Plasch provided support with 6 points and matched Barrette with 6 assists.
Rachel Koenig added to the scoring effort with 8 points, while
Janette Hanni contributed 9 points and 2 assists, helping to round out the team's performance.
Bemidji State holds an overall record of four wins and ten losses, with a conference record of two wins and eight losses in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Winona State has an overall record of eight wins and nine losses, and they are four and seven in conference play.
Following their recent loss, the Bemidji State basketball team will face the University of Minnesota Duluth. The game is scheduled for January 17, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. and will take place in Duluth, Minn. Bemidji State will be the visiting team.
