Wildcats capture game one victory over Beavers

Men’s

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team fell 4-1 Friday night to Northern Michigan University in game one of their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at Sanford Center. The Beavers dropped to 8-11-4 (5-7-3 CCHA) on the season.

Fifth-year senior Eric Martin scored the Beavers' lone goal, his seventh of the season, and extended his point scoring streak to three games. Junior Reilly Funk and senior Jere Vaisanen each assisted on the play for both of their eighth assists of the season.

The teams played a scoreless first period setting up a defensive battle between the Beavers and Wildcats. However, the Wildcats scored two, four-on-four goals in the second period both off the stick of Jakub Altrichter to take a two-goal lead.

The Beavers answered quickly in the third period and 3:26 into the frame, Martin scored a power-play goal to pull the Beavers within one.

BSU struggled to solve Wildcats goaltender Ryan Ouellete for the remainder of the game after he turned aside shot after shot by the Beavers and with 4:08 left, NMU retook a two-goal lead when Matthew Romer scored his fourth of the season. The Wildcats later made it 4-1 with an empty-net goal from Romer with 42 seconds left and Ouellette finished with 24 saves to power Northern Michigan to its first road win of the 2024-25 season.

The Beavers will try to split their series with the Wildcats tomorrow night for game two. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the Sanford Center Ticket Office or online at ticketmaster.com.
