Jutting nets two but Tommies score late to steal game one victory

BSU Men’s Hockey falls 3-2 in game one at St. Thomas Saturday

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – After battling back from two, one-goal deficits the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team fell 3-2 in game one of its series at University of St. Thomas Saturday night in Central Collegiate Hockey Association play. St. Thomas' Matthew Gleason scored the game-winning goal with 2:26 left to steal three points from the Beavers.

The Beavers dropped to 8-13-4 on the season and 5-9-3 in league play while the Tommies improved to 10-10-5 (7-6-4 CCHA). Senior captain Jackson Jutting scored both goals for the Beavers for his second multi-goal game of the season while senior Mattias Sholl made 26 saves in net.

The Tommies opened the game quick with Ryan O'Neill scoring 2:04 after the opening face-off but the Beavers responded before the end of the period when Jutting scored his team-leading fourth power-play goal of the season and extended the Beavers' power-play goal streak to six games.

The teams entered the first intermission locked in the 1-1 tie and UST once again had a quick start to the period after Jake Braccini scored a power-play goal 1:29 into the middle frame. However, Beaver captain Jackson Jutting would answer again scoring his second of the game and eighth of the season at 9:38 of the period.

The third period was a back-and-forth battle just as the first two periods but with 7:22 to play the Beavers were handed a five-minute major penalty and went down a skater for the next five minutes. The Beavers killed most of the major penalty but with four seconds remaining, Tommies' Matthew Gleason scored the go-ahead goal with 2:26 remaining.

The Tommies earned three points in league standings with the series opening victory. The Beavers attempt to salvage the series split tomorrow afternoon for a rare Sunday puck drop slated for 3:07 p.m.
