Sholl backstops Beavers to victory over Tommies Sunday

BSU Men’s Hockey ends nine-game losing winless streak with 2-1 win over St. Thomas

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team ended its nine-game winless streak Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over University of St. Thomas in game two of its Central Collegiate Hockey Association series in Mendota Heights, Minn.

Bemidji State senior goaltender Mattias Sholl backstopped the Beavers to their first win since Dec. 6 by turning aside 20-of-21 shots he faced. The Beavers improved to 9-13-4 (6-9-3 CCHA) and Beaver head coach Tom Serratore earned win No. 397 of his career.

Sholl also earned the 46th victory of his career tying former Beaver Zach Driscoll for second-most victories in the Beavers' DI history.

The Beavers gained crucial three points in the CCHA standings and are seventh in the league with a .444 points percentage and close behind fifth-place with eight games remaining in the regular season.

BSU opened the game scoring 10:29 into the first period when sophomore Kasper Magnussen one-timed the puck for a power-play goal and his third goal of the season.

The power-play marker extended the Beavers power-play goal streak to seven games.

Sholl kept the Beavers in front for the next 39:42 turning aside shot-after-shot by the Tommies but with 10:11 left in the game, Tommies' Chase Cheslock tied the game.

The Beavers responded early and just 44 seconds later, fifth-year senior Eric Martin scored his eighth of the season after junior Patrik Satosaari dished out a nice pass from behind the net.

Sholl and the Beaver's defense continued their strong defensive play to hang on to the lead and claim their first victory since Dec. 6. Sholl stopped seven-of-eight shots in the final period while the Beavers' defense totaled 19 blocks in the game, the fourth most this season.

The Beavers converted on their one power play in the game scoring just six seconds into the penalty while their penalty kill showed up big stopping both Tommie power-play opportunities.

Bemidji State now returns home and prepares to host Ferris State University Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Sanford Center. Paul Bunyan Communications is a presenting sponsor for the weekend and will be giving away 1,000 charging cords over the weekend.
