BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team dominated play from end-to-end, out-pacing and out-shooting Ferris State University two-to-one in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series finale Saturday night at Sanford Center but a late goal by the Bulldogs and eventual empty-netter sent FSU to a 3-1 victory over the Beavers.
Â
The Bulldogs (10-16-2; 9-11-0 CCHA) earned the CCHA series sweep over the Beavers with the win and earn three more points in league standings.
Â
Sophomore
Kasper Magnussen scored his fourth goal of the season but Ferris State's Noah West frustrated the Beavers' offense stopping 29-of-30 shots to collect his second consecutive win.
Â
Ferris State's Kaleb Ergang opened the scoring for the Bulldogs 13:57 into the first period notching his fifth goal of the season.
Â
FSU carried the one-goal lead into the first intermission but 7:39 into the second frame, Magnussen finished off a two-on-one with a crafty forehand-backhand move to beat West and tie the game.
Â
Â
The Beavers kept pressing looking for the go-ahead goal and out-shot the Bulldogs 17-9 after the first two periods. However, 6:30 into the third period, FSU's Caiden Gault found space behind the Beavers' defenses and batted home a back-door pass from Cole Burtch to retake the lead.
Â
West continued to turn aside shot-after-shot by the Beavers stopping all 13 shots he faced in the third period and with 31 seconds left, Ferris State's Gavin Best scored into the empty net to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.
Â
Bemidji State finished the game totaling 30 shots compared to 16 by the Bulldogs while also winning on the face-off dot 33-30 and collecting 20 blocked shots defensively.
Â
The Beavers' penalty kill also killed-off both Bulldog power-play opportunities in the game but their power-play was also stymied by FSU on both of their chances.
Â
In his first start of the season, sophomore
Raythan Robbins made 13 saves for BSU but earned the loss and he falls to 1-1-0.
Â
BSU is now 9-15-4 on the season and 6-11-3 in CCHA play and prepare to hit the road for a league series at Michigan Technological University Feb. 7-8.
