HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team exploded for five goals and captured a 5-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association series opening victory over (RV) Michigan Technological University Friday night at MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich.

The Beavers tied their season-high scoring five goals in the game including three in the third period just 2:06 apart. All five goals were scored by different goal scorers while 11 different Beavers collected a point including junior
Kasper Magnussen who scored a goal and added an assist and junior
Adam Flammang and freshman
Isa Parekh who each earned two assists.

Senior goaltender
Mattias Sholl made 26 saves for the Beavers including 13 in the final period to collect the win earning career victory 47 to move in sole possession for second among Bemidji State Division I netminders. BSU head coach
Tom Serratore earned career victory 398 as well and is just two wins shy of becoming the 31
st DI men's hockey bench boss to reach 400 career victories.

After a scoreless first period, Bemidji State started the scoring 11:50 into the second frame when
Noah Quinn scored his second goal of the season.

The Beavers then took a two goal lead just before the end of the period when
Eric Martin scored his team leading 10
th goal of the season with 2:09 left on the clock.

BSU took the two goal lead into the third period but it diminished to one when Owen Baker of the Huskies scored 3:53 into the final frame. However, halfway through the period, the Beavers rattled off for three, unanswered goals just 2:06 apart to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

Senior
Jere Vaisanen started the flurry of goals at 8:23 of the period scoring his seventh goal of the season.

Then just 1:29 later, sophomore
Kasper Magnussen scored while on a Beaver power-play to send the Beavers up by three.

Just as quickly the fourth goal came, the fifth came even quicker and 37 seconds later,
Jake McLean scored his second goal of the season to put the Beavers up by five.

The Huskies didn't quit and potted a pair of goals late in the period from Matthew Campbell and Chase Pietila but the pair of goals was all they could muster and the Beavers left MacInnes Student Ice Arena with a 5-3 series opening victory.

Bemidji State will now attempt for the series sweep over the Huskies and meet for game two tomorrow evening at 4:07 p.m. CST.           Â
