BEMIDJI, MINN. -- Bemidji State (7-6, 0-0) needed a dose
of the home crowd to get back to its winning ways. After
coming back from a tough tournament in Omaha, Neb. over the
weekend going 0-3, BSU swept Wisconsin-Superior 3-0 in front
of 206 fans at the BSU Gymnasium tonight.
“ We had momentum going into the match tonight and the crowd helped,” said
head coach
Kim Falkenhagen. “We had a tough weekend and we were ready to
get back after it. It was definitely nice to have a crowd like this tonight.”
The Beavers held the Yellowjackets, which are members of the Division III-Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, to eight points in the first game - the
lowest output in the rally scoring era for a BSU opponent.
BSU reeled off 18 of the first 23 points in game one, including nine straight
thanks to three service aces by senior
Kristin Peterson. Peterson finished with
seven, one shy of her school record eight done against Mayville State earlier
in the year. After a lone UW-Superior point, the Beavers knocked down seven consecutive
points and closed out the game only giving up two UW-Superior points the rest
of the way. The green and white hit .485 (19-3-33) while Wisconsin-Superior went
-.069 (3-5-29).
Games two and three saw BSU trail early with the guests earning 4-0 and 8-3 leads.
After the Yellowjackets tallied four straight in the second stanza, the hosts
countered with eight of the next nine to take a 28-24 lead. UW-Superior roared
back with a 4-1 run to come within 29-28 but Bemidji State earned a side out
to take a commanding two-game lead.
Junior
Heather Haugen powered BSU’s comeback in the third game as she had
a hand in six straight points - she totaled seven of her match-high 13 kills
in the game. A service ace by freshman
Lindsey Bromenshenkel notched the score
at 14-14 and BSU never trailed from that point on to win its fifth match in six
attempts at BSU Gymnasium.
Overall, BSU recorded a .200 (43-21-110) hitting percentage with senior
Lisa
Smith posting a .375 (3-0-8) mark. UW-S struggled with a .038 (29-25-105) output
and only had one block compared to 10 from Bemidji State. The Beavers tied a
season-high with 15 service aces.
Peterson complimented Haugen in kills with 13 and added 12 digs for her 18th
career double-double. She surpassed junior
Kristin Smith for the active lead
in that category and has tallied 10 or more kills in 10 of the 13 matches this
season. Freshman
Kathryn McCannell recorded 27 assists in the match - she has
averaged 26.7 assists in the last three matches as the starting setter.
For Wisconsin-Superior, Katie O’Hara posted a team-high nine kills while
Michelle Miskowitz came away with eight digs.
BSU opens up its 12th Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season with a weekend
trip to Winona State (3-10) and Concordia-St. Paul (10-1), Friday and Saturday.
BSU takes on Winona State 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Concordia-St. Paul at 5:00
p.m. on Saturday. Both teams are on a roll as WSU beat No. 23 South Dakota State
over the weekend while the Golden Bears, which received 72 votes in the Sept.
16th edition of the AVCA national polls, defeated No. 8 Minnesota-Duluth.
“It is going to be a real tough weekend with both those teams coming
off
huge wins,” said Falkenhagen. “We can’t go in to their places
lightly.”
