SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Despite a spectacular homecoming for senior forward
Stacia Swanson (Sioux City, Iowa), the Beavers fell to NAIA
No. 2 Morningside College Thursday evening in Sioux City,
Iowa. Swanson pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds while
tying sophomore guard Maggie Gernbacher for the team lead
with 13 points but it would not be enough as Morningside captured
its 15th victory of the season 75-55.
BSU's Swanson gave the Beavers an early 2-0 lead just seconds
into the game, but on the back of Megan Cloud who scored eight
points in the first seven minutes of the game, Morningside
went on a 19-7 scoring run in the first 6:21 of the game.
The Beavers showed signs of life scoring 18 of the next 24
points to knot the score at 25 with just over three minutes
to play in the half, but MC could clamp down its defense and
end the stanza on a 10-2 run to head into the locker rooms
with a 39-27 lead at the break.
The teams ended the half with identical shooting performances
as each squad nailed 12 of its 34 shots (35.3 percent). The
difference came as Morningside hit 7-of-10 form the line while
BSU only got two free-throw opportunities and converted just
one. BSU did control the boards in the half grabbing 27 boards
to MC's 21.
Freshman guard Amy Lawson (Spencer, Iowa) would hit BSU's
first shot of the second half to climb to within 10 points,
but that is as close as the Beavers would get as MC continued
to pour it on in the second half collecting the next seven
points to go up 46-29 just 2:41 into the second stanza and
would go up by as many as 22 (60-38) before coasting to a
75-55 win to improve to 15-1.
Megan Cloud led Morningside and all scorers with 29 points
as MC shot 34.8 percent (24-69).
BSU controlled the glass taking a 51-44 rebounding advantage
over MC.
The loss drops BSU to 3-8 on the year. The Beavers will
be back in action as they ring in the new year Jan. 3 at St.
Cloud State University. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m.
tip-off.
