Meinhardt's Two Goals Power Beavers win over MSU-Moorhead

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team found its offensive stride Sunday against Minnesota State-Moorhead. BSU cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Dragons and were lead by two goals from junior forward Katie Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.)

Meinhardt’s first goal would be the only Beavers’ tally of the first half. Just fifteen minutes into the game freshman Kelly Hyvare (Coon Rapids, Minn.) lofted a perfect pass over the defense to Meinhardt, who had beaten her defender in a foot race to the ball. Meinhardt touched the ball once, then fired a shot past Dragon goalkeeper Andrea Pearson to put BSU up 1-0. The goal was her seventh of the season, while Hyvare picked up her fourth assist.

The Beaver defense and goaltending continued to play flawless allowing just three shots on goal in the first half, none of which found the back of the net.

The second half would be all Bemidji State, as the Beavers posted three goals in just a ten minute span. The first of the three came at the 70-minute mark. Tegan Moehn (Jr.; Ramsey, Minn)lined up a free kick from just inside midfield and sent a pass toward Meinhardt, who corralled the ball and put her team-leading eighth goal of the year in the back of the net. The assist was Moehn’s third of the season.

Two minutes later sophomore Megan Wallner (Bemidji, Minn.) picked up a rebound from a shot taken by Sara Susick (So.; Blaine, Minn) and put the Beavers up 3-0 with her fifth of the season. Susick notched her second assist of the year.

To round out the scoring for the Beavers, Mary Stoltz beat Dragon keeper with a header coming off a corner kick by Hyvare. The goal was Stoltz’s third of the season, and Hyvare picked up her team-leading 19th point on her fifth assist.

Kari Torgerson (New Hope, Minn.) picked up the victory for BSU stopping three shots, while playing just the first half. Freshman Jessica Meath (Bethel, Minn.) played the second half in net stopping all five shots she faced to split the shutout with Torgerson.

The 4-0 victory marked the most goals in a game since 4-2 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Sept. 24. It also marked the seventh time the Beavers have shutout an opponent this season.

With just three regular season games remaining for the Beavers, they will be at home for two next weekend versus conference-leading Winona State and rival Concordia-St. Paul. The Beavers lost to Winona State earlier this season 2-0, but beat CSP 2-1 with both games on the road. The contests are scheduled for a 12:00 pm match with the Warriors on Saturday, and then 1:00 pm against the Golden Bears on Sunday.
