MOORHEAD, Minn. - Bemidji State University
ran into to hot offenses Sunday in Moorhead, Minn. on the
second and final day of the NSIC Northern Crossover as they
dropped games 17-2 and 8-0 against Wayne State College and
Winona State University.
Despite being down just 6-2 after the first four innings of
game one, the Beavers gave up an 11-run fifth inning before
going scoreless in the home half of the inning to drop a 17-2
contest to Wayne State college in their first game of the
day.
BSU gave up three runs in each of the first two innings to
the Wildcats to find themselves down 6-0 before getting themselves
on the board. The Beavers plated a run in each of the next
two innings on RBI hits from freshman second baseman Michelle
Taylor (St. Michael, Minn.) and freshman catcher Missy Schleicher
(Waupun, Wis.). Taylor’s single scored Brenda Fritz
(Jr.; McIntosh, Minn.) and Schleicher’s double brought
Mandy Bambrough (Jr.; Toronto, Ont.) in to score.
After the Beaver defense held the Wildcat offense down for
the third and fourth innings, WSU came alive in the fifth
inning putting the game away by scoring 11 runs in the inning.
Andrea Schue (Roosevelt, Minn.) took the loss for the Beavers
pitching the first 2.2 innings giving up six runs on 11 hits.
Alaina Ryberg pitched the other 2.1 innings giving up 11 runs
on six hits while walking eight.
The Beaver offensive attack collected seven hits, including
a 2-for-2 performance from Schleicher.
In the afternoon game for the Beavers, Winona State’s
pitchers Elissa Wisniewski and Kristen Fossell held the BSU
offense to just one hit in the game, coming off the bat of
senior centerfielder MerriAnne Werder (Browerville, Minn.).
Winona State collected three runs in the first, two in the
second and one in the third before adding two more in the
fourth to salt the game away.
The Bemidji State defense struggled in game two making five
errors which resulted in six unearned runs for the Warriors.
Andrea Schue pitched all five innings for the Beavers giving
up nine hits and two earned runs while walking none.
The losses dropped the Beavers record to 4-26 on the season
and 2-10 in NSIC play. BSU will be back in action on Tuesday,
April 26 when they travel to play the North Dakota Fighting
Sioux in a doubleheader in Grand Forks, N.D. with the first
game slated for 4:00 p.m. The Beavers next home game will
be the following day, Wednesday, April 27 when they host a
twin bill against Minnesota Crookston.
