MARSHALL, Minn. -- Despite generating some offense,
the Bemidji State University softball team dropped back-to-back
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games on the second and final
day of the Southern Crossover. Winona State handled the Beavers 10-2
including a seven-run third inning, while Wayne State took a 6-3
victory.
After dropping both NSIC contests
Saturday, BSU looked to come out hard against Winona State. The Beavers
took a 2-1 lead into the Warrior half of the third innings. Tara
Hiscock (Fr.; Bemidji, Minn.), who went 2-for-3 in the game, scored
both runs for BSU. The first came on an error by the Warrior shortstop,
and the second came on an RBI-single from team hits and RBI leader
Jamie Docken (So.; Owatonna, Minn.)
The
Warrior half of the third inning was not kind to the Beavers efforts as
Winona State posted seven runs which included back-to-back RBI triples
after a Beaver error had kept the inning alive.
BSU
was unable to mount a comeback as the Warriors posted two more runs in
the two innings to enforce the run-rule and take home a 10-2 victory.
Amy
Potter (Fr.; Bovey, Minn.) and Alison Willard (Fr.; Hutchinson, Minn.)
split the pitching duties for the Beavers, combining to give up 10 runs
(four earned) on 12 hits, while walking none. Potter took the loss for
the Beavers dropping her season record to 2-5.
The
final game of the weekend for the Beavers, saw them claw back from a
4-0 deficit, scoring three runs in the fourth inning. After Kasey
Callison (Fr.; Eagle River, Alaska) singled to open the inning, Docken
came to the plate and promptly drove one out of the ballpark for the
first home run of the season by a Beaver. Kelly Carlson (Fr.; Hines,
Minn.) added an RBI-single in the inning to bring the score to 4-3.
Wayne
State responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the
fifth, while the Beaver bats cooled off. The Warriors held off BSU
allowing just two hits in the last three innings to take a 6-3 win.
Hiscock
went 2-for-4 in the game to lead the Beavers at the dish. On the mound,
Lindsey Imhof (Jr.; Littlefork, Minn.) Willard and Potter split up the
duties. Imhof went three innings giving up four runs on four hits.
Willard pitched two innings allowing two runs on four hits, and Potter
closed out the sixth retiring the Wildcats in order, including two
K’s.
Imhof took the loss, dropping her season record to 4-2.
The team record for BSU fell to 9-9, while the its NSIC record fell 0-4.
The
Beavers will be back in action with a doubleheader at Minnesota
State-Moorhead on Tuesday, April 11th. The first pitch for the
conference ballgame is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
