BEMIDJI, Minn. - After being shutout in each of its last two games, the Bemidji State soccer team found the back of the net early and often in a 6-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State. The Beavers were led by leading scorer Kelly Hyvare (So, Coon Rapids, Minn.), who collected two goals and an assist in BSU’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener.
Bemidji State scored five goals in the first half to put the game out of reach. Goalkeepers Kari Torgerson (New Hope, Minn.) and Jessica Meath (Bethel, Minn.) split the duties in net. They combined for three saves.
Hyvare raced past the Mustang defense just two minutes into the game and flicked a goal past the netminder for her fifth goal of the young season. Freshman Danielle Egeberg (New Hope, Minn.) put the ball through to Hyvare for the game’s opening goal.
Hyvare scored again later in the game for her sixth of the year and notched an assist in between on a goal by Danielle Uphoff (Fr., Brainerd, Minn.).
Christina Hicks and Lauren Olivares each added first half goals to help the Beavers to their first league win of the season. Hicks and Olivares each have two goals on the season.
In the second half, the Beavers played ball control, but managed to find the net once more. Uphoff found a crease in the defense and took the ball in to beat the goalie one-on-one for her second goal of the game and third of the season.
With the win, BSU’s record moves to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC. Torgerson got the win in net for Bemidji State to improve her season record to 3-2.
Bemidji State continues league play tomorrow against Wayne State at the BSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. The last time these two teams matched up was in last year’s NSIC Tournament Third Place game. Wayne State beat the Beavers on penalty kicks, 4-3.
