BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field)
- The
Bemidji State University baseball team dropped a non-conference
contest to the University of North Dakota, 12-2, Monday at
the BSU Baseball Field. Beaver batters were held to just five
hits over seven innings while the team left a total of nine
runners on base.
Brent Vollbrecht (So., Morristown, Minn.)
got the start for the Beavers and allowed eight earned runs
and was tagged with the loss (0-4) before coming out of the
game after facing three batters in the fifth inning. Bemidji,
Minn. native Cody Randt earned the decision for UND, giving
up two runs, one earned, and striking out four in the complete
game victory.
All but one of the UND nine reached safely in the game with
Anthony Brenner collecting a pair of hits and four RBI out
of the DH spot.
It took the Sioux just four batters to put the Beavers in
a hole.
After the UND leadoff man reached on a double to left-center
field and Vollbrecht walked the second batter, Brenner stepped
into the box and wrapped a towering shot around the right
field foul pole to put the Sioux up 3-0.
The Beavers clawed their way back during the next two at
bats.
Eric Pilgrim (Sr., Park Rapids, Minn.) was
the first Beaver to bat in the bottom of the second and reached
on a throwing error by the third baseman allowing him to advance
to second. Ryan Bohannon (So., Goodyear,
Mont.) pushed Pilgrim to third on a high fly to right field
and when P.J. McIntee (So., Randolph, Minn.)
singled through the left side, Pilgrim scored trimming the
deficit to 3-1.
The Beavers were back at it in the bottom of the third.
Josh Silvernagel (Fr., Bismarck, N.D.) led
off the inning by drawing a walk. He advanced to second when
Anthony Stoloski (Jr., Half Moon Bay, Calif.)
singled to left field. Josh Juntunen (So.,
Elk River, Minn.) then reached when he was hit by by a pitch
loading the bases for Pilgrim. The Beavers' center fielder
came through in the clutch belting a single to right field
to plate Silvernagel. But the UND lefty would battle back
to get himself out of a jam sitting the next two BSU batters
down by way of the strikeout.
North Dakota scored nine runs during the next three innings
to blow the game wide open.
Meanwhile Randt took the mound in the fourth inning and grabbed
control of the game. Despite his defense making a pair of
errors during the game's final four innings, the lefty faced
just 17 batters and didn't allow a BSU runner to advance past
second base.
The game was originally set to be the first of a double header,
but due to heavy rain through most of the first game, the
nightcap was called off due to wet field conditions.
The Fighting Sioux improved to 8-11 with the victory while
BSU fell to 5-28 overall.
Bemidji State will return to action Wednesday when the Beavers
welcome Upper Iowa University to town for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference double header. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
at the BSU Field.
