MOORHEAD, Minn. - Four goals.
That’s how many total goals the Bemidji State soccer team had scored all season.
Then
came an offensive explosion Saturday afternoon when the Beavers
defeated Minnesota State University Moorhead 5-2 at Alex Nemzek Field
in Moorhead, Minn.
Ashley Ellefsen (Fr., Hugo, Minn.) and Lauren Olivares (Jr., El Paso, Texas) had two goals apiece, and Kara Smyth (Fr., Cary Ill.) added the fifth in another rain-soaked game for BSU, who has now won two in a row and three of its last four.
Smyth put the Beavers (3-2-1, 1-0-0 NSIC) ahead early with a goal in the fourth minute, which was assisted by Kelly Hyvare (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Ellefsen.
The
assist by Hyvare gives her two for the season, and she has now moved
into a second-place tie on the Bemidji State career assist list with
12. She is tied with Ashley Lehmeier (2003-06) and Christina Hicks (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.). The career leader in assists at BSU is Lindsey Natwick (2002-05) who finished her career with 22.
Abby Barker knocked in the equalizer for the Dragons in the 38th minute, and the two teams entered halftime tied 1-1.
The
second half, however, was all Bemidji State. Olivares scored in the
53rd minute to give BSU the lead for good, and Ellefsen knocked in two
insurance goals in the 58th and 63rd minutes. Olivares scored again in
the 78th minute, and Tricia Vanyo put in a meaningless goal in the 87th
minute to make the score the final of 5-2.
BSU’s goalkeeper Jessica Meath
(Jr., Bethel, Minn.) had six saves and allowed two goals while playing
the entire game in net. The goal in the 38th minute ended Meath’s
shutout streak at 162 minutes. She hadn’t allowed a goal since
the 54th minute of the North Dakota State University game September 1.
Andrea Pearson played the entire game in net for the Dragons and had 11
saves while allowing five goals.
Olivares
had the first multi-goal game of her career, and it was also her first
goal scored since Oct. 14, 2006, when she scored against Upper Iowa in
a 3-0 BSU victory.
Ellefsen also recorded
her first collegiate multi-goal game, and she has three goals in the
last two games. She also has seven points on the season, and is now the
leading scorer for the Beavers this year. Smyth is second on the team
in points scored with six.
The five goals by
Bemidji State are the most ever scored against MSUM (2-3-0, 1-1-0
NSIC), and the most goals scored in a game since a 6-0 victory Sept.
16, 2006, against Southwest Minnesota State.
BSU moves to 6-10 all-time against Moorhead, and the Beavers have won the last six meetings dating back to the 2003 season.
Bemidji
State will take one day off before going back on the road Monday to
face the University of Minnesota Duluth. Game time for this contest is
set for 7 p.m.
