BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University
soccer team played extremely hard for 90 minutes, but two late goals by
No. 3-ranked Winona State University proved to be the difference in a
2-0 defeat to the Warriors Saturday afternoon at the BSU Soccer Field.
The
Beavers (7-4, 1-4 NSIC) had an aggressive first half in which they
maintained possession for long stretches of time, and even had a few
scoring opportunities, despite attempting only one shot.
The
second half was more of the same, with Winona State (9-1, 4-0 NSIC)
bringing the ball into BSU territory with no luck, and Bemidji State
taking the ball to the other side of the field before losing possession
and starting all over again.
The defensive effort was phenomenal until the 73rd minute, when Sarah Colleran scored the game-winning goal on a fluke play.
She was chasing down a ball that was going towards the BSU net, 18 yards away from the goal. Alysha Domiano (So., Dayton, Minn.) attempted to clear the ball but it hit the WSU player and went past a charging Samantha Ross (So., Stillwater, Minn.) into the back of the net.
The
Warriors were able to notch an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when
the Beavers were playing with just three defenders in an attempt to
notch an equalizer. Amelia Kasten scored off an assist by Melissa
Sellier, and that was all Winona State needed to post its
fourth-consecutive shutout and its sixth of the season.
Bemidji
State falls to 0-15-1 all-time against the Warriors. The home team
attempted five shots, while WSU had nine shots. The road team had seven
corner kicks while BSU had just three.
Ross
falls to 7-4 on the season after allowing the two goals. She did,
however, save seven shots while playing all 90 minutes in net for BSU.
Bemidji
State will take on Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday at the BSU Soccer Field
in hopes of notching its second win in NSIC action this season.
