ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University
softball team was defeated in its final two games of the Husky Dome
Invitational in St. Cloud, Minn. The Beavers lost Saturday night 5-4 to
Valley City State University, and was taken down 2-0 by host team St.
Cloud State University Sunday evening.
Bemidji
State (0-4) went toe-to-toe with the Vikings, as each team put four on
the board in the first two innings. A single run in the top of the
fourth and a stagnant BSU offense late in the game was enough for VCSU
to take down the Beavers.
Courtney Anderson
(Fr., P, Virginia, Minn.) started for the first time in her career, and
she responded with 7.0 strong innings. She allowed four earned runs and
six hits, while striking out seven and not allowing a walk.
Paige
Smith also went the distance, allowing three earned runs and four hits,
while walking two and striking out six for Valley City State.
Kasey Callison
(Sr., 1B, Eagle River, Alaska) was the best offensive threat for the
green and white, as she finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mara Johnson (Sr., 2B, Bemidji, Minn.) and Jamie Ford (Jr., OF, Edina, Minn.) were both 1-for-3, and they both had one run batted in. Ford and Alison Willard (Sr., P, Hutchinson, Minn.) scored the other two BSU runs.
Sunday’s
contest between BSU and the Huskies turned into a pitchers duel, with
neither team able to cross the plate until late in the game.
SCSU
(5-13) scored once in both the fifth and sixth innings, and Bemidji
State was only able to muster one hit in the losing effort. The lone
BSU hit came from Callison, who went 1-for-3 at the plate, and the
Huskies finished with 10 hits.
Anderson took
the ball for the second-straight game, and had an even better go this
time around. She responded with 6.0 innings and just the two runs. She
struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. In three appearances this
year, Anderson has yet to allow a walk.
Brit
Krieg pitched all 7.0 innings for St. Cloud State and allowed just one
hit. She struck out five and also didn’t allow a walk.
Bemidji
State will look to get on the right track next weekend when the team
travels to Ft. Pierce, Fla., for Florida Coast Softball.
The
Beavers get underway Mar. 6 with a doubleheader against Marywood
University, and will play doubleheaders in Florida on Mar. 6-8 and 10.
