BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Softball Field) - The Bemidji
State University softball team drop two heartbreakers at home Monday
afternoon in the blistering cold temperatures to Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference opponent Northern State University.
BSU
(8-22, 3-15 NSIC) was run-ruled in five innings 12-3 in the opener, and
the Wolves (5-29, 3-17 NSIC) came back in the final inning to take the
second game of the series 2-1.
In the first
game of the day, Bemidji State fell behind 3-0 after the fourth inning,
and gave up nine runs in the top of the fifth. The home black and green
squad could only respond with three runs in the home half of the fifth
to end the game 12-3. BSU was outhit 14-7 in the opener.
Jamie Lund
(So., P/OF, Grantsburn, Wisc.) took the mound for Bemidji State, and
lasted 4.0 innings. She allowed six runs and nine hits, falling to 1-3
on the year. Alison Willard (Sr., P, Hutchinson,
Minn.) came on in the top of the fifth after Lund loaded the bases and
was unable to record an out. Willard pitched the final inning and gave
up five hits and six runs (five earned).
Kelli
Bornander lasted 4.1 innings and gave up six hits and three runs. Kadie
Lydon threw the final 0.2 innings and allowed just one hit while
blanking the Beavers.
Mara Johnson
(Sr., 2B, Bemidji, Minn.) led BSU at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing.
Rachel South was 3-for-4 to pace the Wolves, and four other members of
the road team collected two hits. Sarah Curley was 2-for-3 with three
RBI, and South, Whitney Luhring and Brooke Norris all scored twice.
Karissa Hendrickson (So., 3B/2B, Big Lake, Minn.) led off the second game with a base hit, and she scored to give Bemidji State a 1-0 lead when Amy Klaers (Sr., 3B/C, Elk River, Minn.) drove her home with a single. Courtney Anderson
(Fr., P, Virginia, Minn.) was working a shutout until she gave up two
runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to hand Northern State the
sweep.
Anderson scattered six hits over 7.0
innings, and allowed the two crucial runs in the final inning. She
struck out three and walked just one to fall to 4-11 this year. Breanna
Milnes pitched a three-hit gem, striking out five and allowing just one
run to earn the win.
Brittany Bolstad
(Jr., OF, International Falls, Minn.) was the only Beaver to manage a
hit after the first inning. Ashley Gabler and Curley each collected two
hits for NSU, and they both had an RBI. Lindsey Cegla and Cat Zimmerman
crossed the plate in the seventh for the Wolves.
The Beavers will take the field again at 2:00 p.m. April 22 in Moorhead, Minn., against Minnesota State University Moorhead.
