DULUTH, Minn. (Junction Avenue Field) - The Bemidji
State University softball team fell in both games of its second-to-last
doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon against Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference opponent University of Minnesota Duluth.
UMD
scored once in both the first and second innings and tacked on two more
in the bottom of the fifth with no response from BSU to take the first
game 4-0.
BSU mustered three hits, coming from Karissa Hendrickson (So., 3B/2B, Big Lake, Minn.), Amy Klaers (Sr., 3B/C, Elk River, Minn.) and Bridget Smith (Sr., SS, International Falls, Minn.), but couldn’t plate a baserunner.
The Bulldogs were led by Casey Moore, who went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Nicole Gale went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Alison Willard
(Sr., P, Hutchinson, Minn.) pitched a complete game and allowed four
runs on five hits to fall to 3-11 this year. Kristin Danielson also
went the distance. She pitched a three-hit shutout for the Bulldogs and
struck out seven Beavers to earn the win.
Minnesota
Duluth scored twice in the bottom of both the first and third innings
to jump out to a quick lead in the second game of the day. BSU answered
with its sole run of the doubleheader in the top of the fifth, but five
runs by UMD in the sixth ended the 9-1 game. The Bulldogs cranked out
14 hits to just five by Bemidji State.
Hendrickson again led the way for BSU with her 2-for-3 performance. Klaers notched a run batted in and Brittany Bolstad (Jr., OF, International Falls, Minn.) scored the lone run for Bemidji State.
Moore
went 3-for-4 for Minnesota Duluth, driving home two and scoring three.
Myriam Trepanier, Taylor Van Damme, Danielson and Mandy Matula all had
two hits, and Danielson collected three RBI.
Courtney Anderson
(Fr., P, Virginia, Minn.) lasted just 4.0 innings for the Beavers,
allowing four runs on nine hits. She took the loss and fell to 4-13
this season. Jordan Anderson (Fr., P, Sartell, Minn.) came on and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits. Jamie Lund (So., P/OF, Grantsburn, Wisc.) gave up the final two runs and failed to record an out.
Matula pitched a complete game, scattering five hits across 6.0 innings, and allowed just one unearned run for the victory.
Bemidji
State was originally slated to play a non-conference doubleheader with
the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon, but inclement weather in the Duluth area
has caused those games to be cancelled with no makeup date. Therefore
the Beavers will have their last two games of the 2009 season April 28
when they travel to play University of Minnesota, Crookston. The first
pitch is set to be thrown at 3:00 p.m.
