Beavers snap a three-game slide at Wayne State, 87-80

WAYNE, Neb. – Bemidji State University men’s basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak to end its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road series at Wayne State College. The Beavers held onto their lead with a late comeback by the Wildcats for an 87-80 victory.

Bemidji State, now 6-3 overall and 2-3 in NSIC action will be back in action Dec. 19 as it travels to rival University of Minnesota Crookston for a 7 p.m. tip off before entering the holiday break. The Wildcats drop to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in NSIC play.

The Beavers outshot Wayne State, as they were 50.8 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-range, while the Wildcats finished 43.1 percent from the field and a 36.8 rating from the arch. Wayne State held a 40-37 edge in rebounding. Both teams dished out 14 assists. 

Beavers’ Highlights

  • Brock Lutes earned his first double-double of the season to lead the Beavers with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Lutes scored 13 points in the first half shooting 5-of-9 from the field.
  • DJ Anderson came off the bench to tie a season and career-high 15 points. Anderson led the team in steals with five.
  • Rounding out double-digit scoring was Ben Best and Alexander Sattley with 10 points each.
  • The game marks the third time the Beavers have score over 80 points in a game this season.
  • BSU ended the night tallying 11 steals and three blocks against the Wildcats. 

Wildcats’ Highlights

  • Wayne State was led by Joel Heesch scoring a career-high 23 points as he shot 8-of-12 from the field and added one three point shot and put down six free throws.
  • Jordan Holdsworth and Jordan Cornelius tied for second on the team scoring 13 points each with Trae VandeBerg adding 11.
  • Freshman guard Tyler Nagy led Wayne State in assists with five while Heesch finished with three steals.
  • WSC took advantage at the free throw line with a 70.8 percent rating to put down 17-of-24.
