Bemidji State hosts Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State this weekend

Beavers looks to add the its near perfect home record this weekend

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team welcomes Concordia University-St. Paul and Minnesota State, Mankato for Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games at the BSU Gymnasium, where the Beavers (10-6, 5-5 NSIC) are 6-1. BSU starts the weekend with CSP Friday, at 7:30 p.m., followed by action on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., against MSU.
 
The Series vs Concordia-St. Paul
·         Bemidji State leads the all-time series against Concordia-St. Paul, 19-18.
·         The Beavers and Golden Bears last met earlier this season on Nov. 15, 2022, with a 77-76 win by CSP in St. Paul, Minn.
·         BSU leads the series 13-5 when playing in Bemidji, Minn.
·         BSU and CSP first met Jan. 15, 2000, a 51-49 win by Concordia-St. Paul
 
The Series vs Minnesota State Mankato
·         Minnesota State leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 42-15.
·         The Beavers and Mavericks last met Jan. 3, 2021, with a 91-67 win by MSU in Mankato, Minn.
·         MSU leads the series 18-6 when playing in Bemidji, Minn.
·         BSU and MSU first met Feb. 6, 1960, with a 104-76 win by Minnesota State.
 
 
Fast Break Bemidji State
  • BSU had its four-game winning streak snapped with an 80-87 loss to Upper Iowa University but bounced back the following day and defeated Winona State University 65-61.
  • The Beavers have not lost at home since Dec. 3 when they fell 68-83 to (RV) University of Minnesota, Duluth the only home loss BSU has suffered all season.
  • In the loss at Upper Iowa, Mohamed Kone recorded his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kone followed that performance up with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists against WSU.
  • John Sutherland scored 18 points in back-to-back games on the weekend and against Winona State recorded his fifth double-double when he grabbed 12 rebounds against the Warriors.
  • Bemidji State held Winona State to only 61 points, the lowest a team has scored all season.
  • The Beavers scored ten three-pointers against the Peacocks for their fifth game this season converting on 10-plus shots behind the arc.
  • Dalton Albrecht, Sutherland and Kone are all over 200 points on the season with Sutherland leading the team with 268, 19.1 points per game, and is sixth in the conference
  • Sutherland is now tied for first in the conference in rebounds per game with 9.1 and is third when it comes to offensive rebounds with 2.8 per game.
  • After their low scoring game against WSU, BSU shares third place with Northern State University for scoring offense averaging 80.1 points per game. The Beavers are ranked 12th in scoring defense allowing 76.9 ppg.
  • Mohamed Kone is leading the Beavers in assists with 52 after setting up six baskets on the weekend. Kone is nine assists away from recording fifth most assists in school history.  
  • BSU continues to lead the NSIC team field goal percentage with .493, holding a .008 percent lead over the second-place team. In opponent field goal percentage, the Beavers are ranked 13th with opponents shooting .464. The Beavers are ranked 26th in Division II with their shooting percentage.
  • The Beavers are 15th in turnovers and are 13th in assist to turnover ratio with a 1.04 ratio.
  
Scouting Concordia-St. Paul
  • Head Coach Matt Fletcher starts his third season with the Golden Bears (7-51). 
  • Concordia-St. Paul (3-13, 1-9 NSIC) is currently on a six-game losing streak. Last week CSP fell in two close games first 78-80 against University of Minnesota, Duluth and suffered an overtime loss to St. Cloud State University 78-87.  
  • CSP averages 72.4 points per game shooting 45.5% from the field and 35.3% from behind the arc.
  • Junior guard Antwan Kimmons leads the Golden Bears in points, assists and steals. Kimmons is third in the NSIC with 333 points, fifth in assists with 70 and 10th in steals with 21.
 
Scouting Minnesota State Mankato
  • Head Coach Matt Margenthaler starts his 22nd season with the Mavericks (448-201).
  • MSU (12-4, 6-4 NSIC) split the weekend with a 78-65 victory over St. Cloud State then lost to Minnesota Duluth 76-85. 
  • MSU averaged 81.3 points per game shooting 46.8% from the field and 37.1% from behind the arc.
  • Junior guard Malik Willingham leads the Mavericks with 274 points, 68 assists and 25 steals. Willingham's best game of the season came against Concordia-St. Paul on Nov. 22 where he dropped 41 points, scoring eight three-pointers.
