BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University completed the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep over the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team Saturday night with a 5-2 victory in game two at Slater Family Arena.
It is the first time the Beavers (9-8-5, 7-4-3 CCHA) have been swept this season and first time since 2017 that the Falcons (14-12-0, 11-7-0 CCHA) completed the series sweep over BSU.
After a scoreless first period, Bowling Green opened the scoring in the game with a goal from Chase Gresock 3:15 into the second period. The Falcons later extended their lead to 2-0 when Taylor Schneider scored at 12:32 of the middle frame while on the power play.
The Beavers responded four minutes later when fifth-year senior
Mitchell Martan scored a power-play goal with 3:39 remaining in the period for his seventh goal of the season.
The goal snapped a six-game scoreless streak for the Canisius College transfer and Whitby, Ontario native.
The second period would end with the Beavers trailing by one but just 4:55 into the third period, junior transfer
Jackson Jutting benefitted from a turnover right in front of the Falcons' net and scored his third goal of the season to tie the game at two.
However, just as quick as they tied it the Beavers' lead disappeared 1:43 later when Max Coyle retook the lead for the Falcons with 13:22 to play. Bemidji State pushed for the game-tying goal once again but were shutdown by BGSU netminder Christian Stoever for the second consecutive night. BSU pulled its goaltender in favor of the extra attacker with two minutes to play and the Falcons scored twice into the empty net from Ethan Scardina with 1:18 to play and then again from Anton Malmstrom with 18 seconds left to clinch the 5-2 victory.
Bemidji State out-shot the Falcons 33-29 in the game with Stoever turning aside 31 of the Beavers' 33 shots to pick up the victory.
BSU's
Mattias Sholl totaled 24 saves in the game but falls to 7-5-5 with the loss.
Bemidji State scored on its lone power play opportunity of the game while the Falcons went 1-for-4.
Bemidji State will attempt to get back into the win column when it returns home next weekend and hosts Northern Michigan University at Sanford Center for a pair of CCHA games, Jan. 20-21.
