SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Sophomore
Alexander Lundman scored with just 16.8 seconds remaining as the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team completed an improbable comeback to defeat Lake Superior State University 3-2 Friday night in game one of their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
Â
The Beavers (11-9-5, 9-5-3 CCHA) got off to a slow start in the game and the Lakers (4-21-2, 3-15-1 CCHA) took advantage when Timo Bakos scored just 4:25 after the opening face-off for his sixth goal of the season. The Lakers then extended their lead to two just before the period's end when Tyler Williams netted his first goal of the season with just 1:50 to play in the period.
Â
The Beavers found their legs in the second period and used their power play to get back into the game. Fifth-year senior
Ross Armour put the Beavers on the board first in the middle frame after he tipped home an Elias Rosén shot from the point to score his eighth goal of the season 11:28 into the second.
Â
The score would remain unchanged after 40 minutes of play but the Armour and the Beavers struck again 8:25 into the final period when Armour scored his second goal of the game and second power-play goal after finding a loose rebound in front of the crease and fired the puck into a wide open net to record his third career multi-goal game and second of the season (Dec. 10 vs LSSU).
Â
The goal stole all of the momentum at Taffy Abel Arena and with just 16.8 seconds remaining, Lundman weaved through four Lakers and beat LSSU goaltender Ethan Langenegger with a shot to the far post to complete the comeback victory for the Beavers.
Â
The goal was Lundman's eighth of the season to tie for the team lead and his first Dec. 15 and earned the Beavers just their second win of the season when trailing after the second period (2-6-1).
Â
A total of seven Beavers recorded a point in the game led by Armour (2g) and senior
Carter Jones who assisted on both of Armour's power-play goals.
Â
BSU finished going 2-for-4 with the man advantage while its penalty kill killed off all three of the Lakers chances to extend its penalty kill streak to 10 consecutive successful penalty kills.
Â
The Beavers totaled 30 shots in the game and out-shot the Lakers 30-27 with Armour leading the way with five shots on goal.
Â
Sophomore
Mattias Sholl started the game for the Beavers between the pipes and after giving up two goals in 18:15 of play head coach
Tom Serratore swapped goaltenders in favor of junior
Gavin Enright who turned aside all 14 shots by the Lakers in the remaining 41:45.
Â
Enright earns the victory in goal for the Beavers for his first victory since Nov. 5. He improves his season record to 3-3-0.
Â
Bemidji State earns three points in the CCHA standings with the regulation victory and sit four points back of Michigan Tech for third-place with two games in hand against the Huskies.
