BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Golf team sent three teams to the course on Monday to begin the 72nd annual BSU Invitational with two teams tied for second and the other just a stroke back. Logan Schoepp led the way on the individual side as he is tied for second.
Bemidji State's second and third teams are tied for second with 11-over 295's, while BSU's first team is in sixth, but just a shot back of the other two teams with a 296. Minnesota State leads the eight-team field with a four-under 280 to lead by 15 shots. Minnesota State's Ben Laffen holds a small lead with a three-under 68, with Schoepp and two other golfers just a shot back.
Schoepp leads the 15 Beavers competing in the home tournament as he carded four birdies, with three on the front-nine. He also added an eagle on hole nine.
Schoepp and BSU's second team is tied for second overall. Caden Lick opened with a two-over 73 and is tied for 12th. Lick had four birdies. Cody Card came away with an opening round 76 (+5) to tie for 27th and both Jack Southard and Charlie Williams are tied for 33rd with opening rounds of 77 (+6).
The third BSU team is tied with the second BSU team, along with Minnesota Crookston and Augustana for second with a 295. Rory Wutzke, Cullen Ryan and Ryan Engel are all tied for 12th with opening rounds of 73 (+2). Engel collected six birdies to lead the group. Tanner Wanous is tied for 27th with a first round score of 76 (+5). Saylor Kuenzel came away with a 79 (+8) and is tied for 41st.
Bemidji State's first team is in sixth, but just a stroke behind the four teams tied for second with an opening round 296. Koby Kuenzel and Teagan LaPlante paced the first team with two-over 73's and are tied for 12th. Brandon Bervig and Tate Usher opened with first round scores of 75 (+4) and are tied for 25th. Alex Tanner was just a few shots back with a 77 (+6) and is tied for 33rd.
The second and final round of the BSU Invitational will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday).
