Top two teams in CCHA standings clash in Houghton

BSU Men’s Hockey travels to (RV) Michigan Tech as No. 1 and No. 2 in CCHA standings meet

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings do battle this weekend as the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team travels to Houghton, Mich., for a two-game, CCHA series with (RV) Michigan Technological University.
 
The Beavers (7-4-1, 5-0-1 CCHA) step foot in John MacInnes Student Ice Arena as the top-ranked team in the CCHA while the Huskies (7-3-0, 4-0-0 CCHA) aim to seize the top spot. Both teams enter the weekend's action undefeated in conference play and each riding three-game winning streaks.
 
The teams begin battle Friday evening beginning with game one of their two-game series at 6:07 p.m. CST. The teams will then play game two Saturday at 5:07 p.m. CST.
 
Each game will be exclusively streamed online at MidCo Sports Plus with Michigan Tech Athletics providing play-by-play. Fans can also tune-in to a Beaver Radio Network broadcast for both games on the radio dial at 92.1 FM or online at www.beaverradionetwork.com.
 
Bemidji State Notes
  • Winners of their last three, the Beavers enter week seven of the regular season No. 1 in the CCHA standings totaling 14 points with a 5-0-1 record in league play.
  • The Beavers haven't lost a league game and are unbeaten in their last six games.
  • Vibes are high within the BSU locker room after the Beavers swept Lake Superior State University last weekend earning five-of-six points in the series.
  • Bemidji State opened the series with the Lakers with a commanding 4-1 victory in game one and then went to overtime for the fourth time in six games Saturday night winning 3-2 in the extra frame.
  • Four of the Beavers' six conference games have gone into overtime with BSU scoring three game-winning goals during the 3-on-3 period.
  • The Beavers' three overtime winning goals this season is the most across Division I men's hockey.
  • Senior Adam Flammang led the Beavers factoring in on three of the Beavers' seven goals over the weekend after he scored twice and added an assist.
  • Flammang has scored a goal in each of the last four games and leads the team with at least point each of his last seven games (4g-5a).
  • The St. Michael, Minn., native leads the team with 14 points (5g-9a) despite missing two games due to injury and is 11th across all of DI averaging 1.40 points per game.
  • 13 Beavers recorded a point in their series with the Lakers with Flammang, Kasper Magnussen (1g-1a), Vann Yuhas (2a) and Alexi Sylvestre (2a) each recording two points or more.
  • Senior defenseman Mitch Wolfe scored the go-ahead goal in Saturday's win and was named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week blocking three shots defensively and was a +2 skater. He earned the award for the second time in his career.
  • Bemidji State leads the nation with 18 skaters who have scored this season boasting its team depth.
  • Bemidji State has scored three or more goals in each of its last four games and is outscoring teams 18-11 during its six-game unbeaten streak.
  • Flammang's 14 points this season paces the team and is followed closely by junior Oliver Peer (6g-7a) and junior Kasper Magnussen (3g-8a).
  • The line of Flammang, Peer and Magnussen has scored 14 of the Beavers' CCHA leading 40 goals (35-percent).
  • The Beavers are sixth in the nation with 40 goals scored this season and are 18th averaging 3.33 per game.
  • The Beavers rank third in the CCHA and 24th nationally allowing just 2.67 goals per game.
  • Head coach Tom Serratore has split time in net between junior Raythan Robbins and freshman Max Hildebrand.
  • Hildebrand leads BSU netminders with seven starts while Robbins follows with five.
  • Robbins paces the team with a 1.97 GAA and .920 save percentage and is 3-1-1 on the season while Hildebrand is 4-3-0 with a 3.22 GAA and .885 save percentage.
  • Hildebrand has had the hot glove as of late and is 3-0-0 over the last five games posting a 1.95 GAA and .923 save percentage.
  • Bemidji State reentered the USCHO.com Top-20 national poll and is receiving votes for the first time since Oct. 27 but remains unranked in the USA Hockey College Hockey Poll.
  • The all-time series between the Huskies and Beavers is nearly split down the middle but MTU holds a slight advantage over BSU with a 25-24-9 series record.
  • However, the Beavers have won the last two meetings which were played at MacInnes Ice Arena in Houghton.
  • In Houghton, the Beavers are 9-11-7 against the Huskies.
  • Flammang and Magnussen pace the team with six points in their careers against MTU with Magnussen also leading the team with five goals scored against the Huskies.
  • Head coach Tom Serratore is 24-25-9 when coaching against the Huskies in his 25 seasons at the helm of the Beaver Men's Hockey program.
  • 2025-26 is the 70th season of Beaver Hockey and its 27th season in Division I.
  • Head Coach Tom Serratore is in his 25th season leading the Beaver Hockey program and is tied with Rico Blasi of University of St. Thomas as the most tenured coach in the CCHA.
  • Serratore is the sixth-most tenured coach among active coaches in Division I and is ninth among active coaches with 408 career wins.
  • He is an eight-time conference Coach of the Year and the second winningest coach in Beaver Hockey history (R.H. "Bob" Peters).
  • Serratore returns a veteran group from the 2024-25 season as 18 skaters make their return to the squad while 10 newcomers look to make their green and white debut.
  • Bemidji State returns seven of its 10 leading scorers from last season including top point-getter and 2025-26 captain, Kirklan Irey.
  • Irey captains the Beavers during the 2025-26 season after he led the Beavers in points with 24 (11g-13a).
  • Senior Reilly Funk also returns after finishing second on the team with 23 points and led the Beavers with 16 assists.
  • The Beavers' most experienced group is their blueline returning five of their top seven defensemen from last season.
  • BSU has an average of 59 games played between its seven returning blueliners.
  • It's top returning point-getter from the blueline is sophomore Isa Parekh who totaled 18 points (3g-15a) and was a CCHA All-Rookie Team selection last year.
  • He is followed by senior Patrik Satosaari who had 10 points (3g-7a) from the blue line while seniors Mitch Wolfe (2g-6a) and A.J. Macaulay (0g-2a) followed.
  • Bemidji State returns 54-percent of its goals from last season led by Kirklan Irey (11), Reilly Funk (7) and Kasper Magnussen (7).
  • The Beavers will have new faces in net following the graduation of Mattias Sholl who made 117 appearances during his collegiate career.
  • Bemidji State's most experienced goaltender is junior Raythan Robbins who has played 171 minutes in his career.
  • Also returning is sophomore Trent Wiemken who has yet to make an appearance while freshman and Western Hockey League (WHL) Goaltender of the Year Max Hildebrand will guard the net for the Beavers this season.
  • The Beavers return nine forwards including eight from the senior or junior class.
  • 10 newcomers were brought in for a total roster size of 28 (15-F, 10-D, 3-G).
  • Vincent Labelle, Connor McClennon, Hudson Thornton, Vann Yuhas, Oliver Peer, Max Hildebrand, Max Vig, Ben Vigneault, Oscar Karlsson and Max Namestnikov all look to make their debut for Bemidji State this season.
  • Three newcomers come from the USports league of Canada (Labelle, McClennon, Peer), one from the ECHL (Thornton), one NCAA transfer (Yuhas) and five from junior hockey leagues (Hildebrand-WHL, Vig-USHL, Vigneault-QMJHL, Karlsson-J20 Nationell, Namestnikov-OHL).
  • Freshman Max Vig highlights the Beavers' newcomers after he was drafted 209th overall (7th Round) of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He is the seventh Beaver to be drafted into the NHL and first since Eric Pohlkamp (2023).
  • Vig joins Pohlkamp (fifth round - San Jose - 132nd), Radoslav Illo (fifth round - Anaheim - 136th), Chris Peluso (seventh round - Pittsburgh - 194th), Andrew Murray (eighth round - Columbus - 242nd), Gary Sargent (third round - Los Angeles - 48th) and Dale Smedsmo (seventh round - Toronto - 93rd) as Bemidji State NHL draft picks.
  • Bemidji State's roster primarily consists of those hailing from Canada as 50-percent claim roots from our northern neighbors.
  • 14 call Canada home while 11 are from the United States and three from Europe.
  • Bemidji State has the most Canadians (14) on its team since the 2016-17 season.
  • Irey is the 65th captain in Beaver Hockey history and is joined by Vince Corcoran, Adam Flammang and Mitch Wolfe who will serve as alternates.
  • The Beavers were voted to finish sixth in the CCHA Preseason Coaches' Poll after garnering 54 points in the poll and Parekh was selected as a CCHA Preseason All-CCHA Team member.
  • By average, Bemidji State is one of the smallest teams in Division I Men's Hockey tying with Lake Superior State, Mercyhurst and Quinnipiac with an average height of 5'11.6".
