Beavers welcome Falcons for final home series of regular season

BSU Men’s Hockey hosts Bowling Green for penultimate series of 2024-25 regular season

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team will play its final series at home of the 2024-25 regular season this weekend and hosts Bowling Green State University with key Central Collegiate Hockey Association points on the line.
 
The Beavers (11-15-4, 8-11-3 CCHA) are coming off of their final bye week with fresh legs ready to battle the Falcons (15-10-4, 11-7-4 CCHA) and improve their positioning in the league standings. Game one against the Falcons is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 at 7:07 p.m., with game two Saturday at 6:07 p.m.
 
Each game will be exclusively streamed online at MidCo Sports Plus with the Beaver Radio Network providing play-by-play. Beaver Hockey fans can also tune-in to the Beaver Radio Network broadcast on the radio dial at 92.1 FM or online at www.beaverradionetwork with Brian Schultz and Brian Bissonette on the call.
 
Bemidji State Notes
  • The Beavers return home for their final home series of the regular season.
  • Bemidji State will honor its five seniors prior to Saturday's game for Senior Day. Tony Follmer, Will Magnuson, Donte Lawson, Jere Vaisanen and Mattias Sholl each play their final home regular season games this weekend.
  • Just four games remain in the 2024-25 regular season with BSU ending the season at Minnesota State University, Mankato Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
  • Bemidji State returns home where it is 4-8-2 this season.
  • The Beavers currently sit eighth in the CCHA standings with a .439 points percentage but could finish anywhere between third and eighth with small margins between each spot.
  • BSU will need to continue its winning ways as of late in order to climb the standings and are coming off a five-point weekend at Michigan Tech.
  • The Beavers spoiled Winter Carnival for the Huskies in their series played on Feb. 7-8 earning a 5-3 victory in game one and then 6-5 overtime win in game two.
  • The Beavers totaled 11 goals over the weekend, the most in a season series this season and since Dec. 3-4, 2021 against St. Thomas (11 goals).
  • Four of the Beavers' 11 goals in the series came on the power play and converted at a .500 clip over the series.
  • Sophomore Kasper Magnussen led the Beavers scoring three goals and added an assist for a four-point weekend and tallied three power-play goals to earn his first CCHA Forward of the Week honor.
  • The wins were also the 398th and 399th of head coach Tom Serratore's 24-year career.
  • He seeks to become the 31st head coach in Division I Men's Hockey to reach the 400-win milestone and the 12th active head coach.
  • The Falcons are coming off a semi-bye week after having played the U.S. National Development Team in their last action Feb. 14 falling 6-4 in the game.
  • BGSU enters the weekend's action third in league standings with a .591 points percentage and the second most points in the league.
  • Bowling Green is 8-6-1 when playing on the road and 15-10-4 overall.
  • The teams meet again for the second of their two regular season series and last met Jan. 10-11 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
  • The first two meetings each went into overtime with BSU earning three points over the weekend with an overtime loss in game one and then a shootout victory in game two.
  • Junior Adam Flammang recorded five points in the series (1g-4a) while senior Jere Vaisanen (2g-1a) and junior Kirklan Irey (1g-2a) each added three.
  • The all-time series is close between the two teams but Bowling Green owns a slight advantage with a 21-19-4 record.
  • However, the Beavers are 14-7-2 when facing the Falcons at home.
  • Fifth-year senior Eric Martin leads the Beavers with 9 career points (4g-5a) in 17 career games against the Falcons while Flammang follows with seven points (3g-4a) in six games.
  • Senior Mattias Sholl is 5-6-1 in 12 starts against the Falcons and has a .902 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average.
  • Head coach Tom Serratore is 19-21-4 in 24 seasons coaching against the Falcons.
  • Kirklan Irey lead the Beavers and is tied for eighth in the CCHA with a career-high 22 points (9g-13a).
  • Eric Martin follows with 20 points off 10 goals and 10 assists. His 10 goals this season are a career-high and it is the second consecutive season reaching the 20-point mark.
  • Junior Reilly Funk has recorded six goals and 12 assists in his first season with the Beavers for third on the team after transferring from Northern Michigan.
  • Senior Jere Vaisanen follows with 16 points off seven goals and nine assists.
  • Fifth-year senior and captain Jackson Jutting leads the CCHA and is third in the nation with 703 faceoffs taken. His 356 faceoffs won is eighth-most in the nation and he boasts a 50.6 percent win rate.
  • Freshman defenseman Isa Parekh leads BSU blueliners with 16 points (3g-13a) on the season and is tied for fifth among league defenders and second among the league's rookie defensemen.
  • Parekh quarterbacks the Beavers' power play that is third in the CCHA and 11th in the nation converting on .244-percent of its power plays (19-of-78).
  • Magnussen leads the Beavers with six power-play goals which is tied for the second most in the CCHA.
  • Bemidji State's penalty kill is seventh in the league with a penalty-kill percentage of .733 (55-of-75).
  • BSU has been called for a CCHA low 86 penalties this season and their 75 opponent power plays leads the CCHA and is the sixth fewest in Division I.
  • Senior defenseman Will Magnuson is tied for the lead in the CCHA with 65 blocked shots despite missing three games due to injury. He is tied for fifth most in the nation.
  • Bemidji State is second in the CCHA with 402 blocked shots.
  • Senior goaltender Mattias Sholl has started 29 of the team's 30 games between the pipes and has played in 94-percent of the team's minutes.
  • Sholl is 10-14-4 on the season with a 2.92 goals against average and .891 save percentage.
  • Sholl is climbing Bemidji State's goaltending record books and in the Beavers DI era, he is second in BSU's DI era with 48 career wins and second with 2,573 career saves.
  • Fifth-year senior Eric Martin has 85 career points during his time with the Beavers. He is the 21st Beaver in their DI era to surpass 80 career points and his 58 career assist are the 11th most in BSU's DI era.
  • Martin has played in 158 career games for the Beavers which is the fourth most in program history.
  • Serratore is 399-375-103 in his 24 seasons as head coach of the Beavers and boasts a .515 career winning percentage.
  • Jackson Jutting was voted the team's captain by his peers during the summer and will dawn the "C" while Martin, Austin Jouppi and Jere Vaisanen will each serve as alternates.
  • A.J. Macauly and Reilly Funk join the Beavers with past collegiate experience after Macauly played two seasons at Alaska-Fairbanks and Funk played three seasons at Northern Michigan.
  • The Beavers boast their experience this season and have three graduates, five seniors, and seven juniors on the squad.
  • The Beavers were picked to finish second in the CCHA Preseason Coaches' Poll while senior goaltender Mattias Sholl was the unanimous CCHA Preseason Goaltender of the Year.
  • Serratore is in his 24th season at the helm of the Bemidji State Men's Hockey program. He is 399-375-103 (.515) in his coaching career.
  • Since taking over the Bemidji State Men's Hockey program in 2001, Serratore's teams have achieved eight regular-season conference championships, three CHA tournament titles, five NCAA Tournament appearances, one NCAA Frozen Four appearance (2009) and he is an eight-time conference Coach of the Year including most recently in 2024.
  • The 2024-25 Beaver roster consists of 27 student-athletes with three graduates, five seniors, seven juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen.
  • The team consists of 8 Minnesotans, 24 from North America including nine Canadians and three from Europe.
  • By average, the Beavers are one of the smallest in Division I. They are tied for third in DI for the smallest by height averaging 5'11.6" and the smallest by weight averaging 178.9 pounds.
