Beaver playoff hopes resting on weekend in North Dakota

0-10 since mid-December, Beavers find themselves in must-win situations with six games remaining

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University Men's Basketball heads on the road to Minot, N.D. and Bismarck, N.D. Thursday and Saturday for a pair of high-stakes Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contests. The Beavers will take on Minot State University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and University of Mary at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Bemidji State Notes
  • The Beavers' losing slump has played a strong impact on their playoff hopes as they hold 14th in the conference behind Minot State and above UMary and University of Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers and Marauders hold the same conference record of 3-13 but the Beavers have the upper hand when it comes to the overall look, going 6-15 with one extra win and two fewer losses.
  • For the playoff picture, the Beavers move into 13th in the conference as the University of Jamestown is ineligible for post-season play due to being in their first season joining the conference. This moves all teams below the Jimmies up one spot, still landing BSU outside of the necessary top 12.
  • To help playoff hopes, BSU needs at least four wins, a sweep this weekend could play a crucial role as the Beavers are surrounded by this weekend's opponents in the rankings. A win over MSU keeps BSU behind but potentially gives the Beavers a boost with a UMary loss. On the opposite, another loss to MSU would throw a wrench in plans, but BSU could still pull away from the weekend with a second win over UMary, getting further away from the bottom.
  • Following this weekend, BSU returns home to play Northern State University and University of Jamestown at the Sanford Center Feb. 12 and 14. The annual SAAC Mental Health Awareness game is set for Feb. 12 with Valentine's Day, Pink Out, Scholarship Appreciation and Alumni weekend all on the schedule for the following Saturday.

Minot State Notes
  • Minot State is holding onto 13th in the NSIC with a 5-11 record, 8-14 overall. Both Beaver teams have found themselves in a funk over the past month with Minot State losing the past eight match ups. The Beavers' most recent win came in a three-point victory over UMary at the start of January.
  • At this point, Minot State is in playoff contention, moving up to 12th with the removal of Jamestown. Bemidji State will look to change this and grab the positioning with critical games this weekend.

UMary Notes
  • UMary takes up spot number 15 in the conference, just behind BSU but with a matching conference record. The Beavers hold the advantage when it comes to the initial tie-breaker of head-to-head games after winning the first meeting of the two teams back in December by a score of 89-77.
  • The Marauders have also been in a slump since the turn of the new year, falling in their last seven games. The most recent win for UMary came on Dec. 31 with a 32-point win over Bismarck State College.
