BEMIDJI, MINN. -- Behind the game-winner
from freshman
Katie Meinhardt in the 84th minute, the Bemidji
State soccer program notched its fifth win on the season,
a school record, with a 2-1 NSIC win over Minnesota-Crookston
today at the BSU Soccer Complex. The Beavers totaled four
victories in each of their last three seasons.
“ It was an exciting game and we were resilient in getting that second goal,” said
head coach
Jim Stone. “Now, we are trying to focus on our last two conference
games and play as best we can.
“Our goal is to make the conference tournament. I think we can do that
by winning one of those two games.”
Meinhardt’s fourth career goal, which is tops on the team this season,
was a rebound from a kick sent in by sophomore
Lindsay Natwick. UM-C goaltender
Kathryn Leonard halted the initial attempt but slapped the ball to her right
and Meinhardt was there to clean it up. Natwick’s assist was her second
of the day and fourth in 2003; she is now tied for the team lead in assists and
stands first with 10 points.
The late heroics were needed by Meinhardt as the Golden Eagles found the back
of the net in the 55th minute. Christie Chappell was credited with her team-leading
sixth tally on the season. Kimberly Adams posted an assist on the play.
BSU lighted the scoreboard first as sophomore
Erin Foss took a corner kick by
Natwick to record her first goal of the season. That tally took place in the
17th minute.
In goal, freshman
Kari Torgerson stopped 12 UM-Crookston shots for her fifth
season win. Meanwhile, Leonard totaled eight saves.
Bemidji State improves to 5-11-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the NSIC while Minnesota-Crookston
drops to 6-9-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.
BSU wraps up the season on the road as it invades SW Minnesota State, Oct. 31
and Wayne State (Neb.), Nov. 1. Both matches are slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
