WAYNE, NEB. - The Bemidji State soccer team saw its season end this afternoon in a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Wayne State in Wayne, Nebraska.

The match proved to be a defensive struggle and the two teams ended regulation play in a 0-0 tie. The Wildcats would earn the game winner in the 99th minute as Mary Anne Liebentritt beat goalkeeper Kari Torgerson off a helper from Brea Rath, giving Wayne State the 1-0 victory.

Head coach Jim Stone commented on the tough loss for the Beavers.

“It was a disappointing way to end the season and losing in the last second of overtime hurts, especially when we had a chance to make the conference tournament with a win,” Stone said.

Although the season is over for the Beavers, Stone believes his team can take a lot of positives from this season.

“Our girls worked hard all season and I think we’re moving in the right direction,” said Stone, “We’ll add another good recruiting class and take another step forward next season."

Freshman goalkeeper Kari Torgerson stopped nine shots in the loss for BSU. Torgerson’s season totals have earned her a top spot in the record books in several categories, including goals against average (1.74), minutes (1,605), and goals allowed (31).

The Beavers finished with a school record five wins, after posting four victories in each of the past three years. BSU was 5-13-1 overall and 2-6-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
