BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University tennis
team hosted Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe University
of Minnesota-Duluth today at the Gillette Recreation and Fitness
Center. The Bulldogs took the match 9-0 over the Beavers.
In its most competitive pairings yet, Bemidji State was beaten
in all three of the doubles matches to begin the match. UMD’s
team of Amber Fischer and Allison Warn won the No. 1 doubles
match over
Sherry Kuzel and Nikki Baird 8-1.
In the second doubles spot, the Bulldog's Jill Barle and Kara
Skildum were victorious over BSU’s
Alice Oliviera
and Holly Gilbertson 8-5. And in the No. 3 doubles
match, the Beaver’s
Sarah Longtin and Angie
Harrison were beaten in 9-7, coming back and taking
the Bulldogs’ team of Rachel Stutelberg and Jenny Whalen
into an extra game.
In singles competition, the Bulldogs completed the clean sweep
of BSU taking each of the six matches to vault them to a 9-0
team victory.
In the No. 1 spot BSU’s
Sherry Kuzel
was defeated by Jill Barle 6-1, 7-5.
Nikki Baird
was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by the Bulldog's Amber Fischer. UMD’s
Allison Warn was victorious at No. 3 over
Holly Gilbertson
6-1, 6-0. Jenny Whalen topped BSU’s
Alice Oliviera
6-4, 6-1 in the fourth singles match-up. Bemidji State’s
Kelly Kuntz was bettered by Rachel Stutelberg,
6-0, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot. And at six singles,
Angie
Harrison was defeated by the Bulldogs’ Elizabeth
Standke 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
BSU will continue its homestand tomorrow when it hosts the
college of St. Scholastica in non-conference competition.
The match will be played at the Gillette Recreation and Fitness
Center on the Bemidji State University campus. Play is scheduled
to begin at 1:00 p.m.
