BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University tennis team hosted non-conference St. Scholastica today at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The Saints were victorious over the Beavers 7-2

The match began with the doubles pairings. St. Scholastica was victorious in each of the three doubles matches. The team of Emily Jackola and Katie Kundel came out on top of BSU’s Sherry Kuzel and Nikki Baird 8-6 in the best of eight games. The Beaver’s Kelly Kuntz and Sarah Longtin were defeated by Erin Simonson and Stacy Quast 8-5. In the No. 3 spot, the Saint’s team of Emily Olson and Stacy Novak were victorious over Emily Berg and Tina Kelly 8-4.

In singles competition, the Saints came away with four wins, but BSU would claw its way to two wins, taking the matches in tie-breakers.

In No. 1 singles, Emily Jackola defeated BSU’s Sherry Kuzel 6-3, 6-1. The No. 2 singles match pitted the Saint’s Katie Kundel against the Beaver's Nikki Baird. Kundel was victorious in the match 6-2, 6-0. Holly Gilbertson was in the No. 3 spot for the Beaver’s. She was matched up with Erin Simonson from St. Scholastica. Simonson took the first set 6-1, but Gilbertson fought back to take the second set 6-3 and win the tie-breaker 10-6. In the No. 4 spot, Stacy Quast was victorious over the Beaver’s Erin Siewart 6-4, 6-1. The Saint’s Stacy Novak defeated Alice Oliviera of the Beavers 6-2, 6-1. The No. 6 singles match featured BSU’s Angie Harrison and the Saints Emily Olson. Harrison took the first set 6-3, but Olson came back to win the second set 2-6 before Harrison took care of her opponent 10-5 in a tie-breaker.

Bemidji State is now 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition. The Beavers will be in action again Feb. 22-23 when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn to face St. Cloud State Saturday and the College of St. Catherine’s Sunday.
