Fargo, N.D. - The Bemidji State University tennis team hit the road for the first time of its young season Sunday when it traveled to Fargo, N.D. to meet up with Minnesota State-Moorhead. The Dragons beat the Beavers 7-2 using experience to outplay BSU.

A starting line-up with two seniors, two juniors, a sophomore, and two freshman may not always be looked at as veteran roster, but when the most experienced players in the BSU line-up Sunday had only one NSIC season under their belt it can be.

Sherry Kuzel was in the No. 1 spot for BSU as she was defeated by Jamie Lill 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 2 position, MSU-Moorhead’s Annie Rollins downed Kelly Kuntz 6-0, 6-0. BSU’s No. 3, Nikki Baird was defeated by Jena Carlson 6-1, 6-4. And the No. 4 spot was taken by MSU’s Tana Wagner over Holly Gilbertson 6-4, 6-2.

The Beavers got on their winning ways in the No. 5 singles spot when freshman Alice Oliviera was victorious over Amy Fuoss 7-5, 6-3. Erin Siewert got her first singles win for the Beavers when she beat Lisa Anderson 6-2, 7-5 on the No. 6 position. sophomore Angie Harrison also was victorious in her match although it did not count for the match score as she beat MSU’s Karen Lin 8-0 in exhibition play.

In doubles, the BSU team of Kuntz and Oliviera was beaten 8-1 by Lill and Wagner in the No. 1 doubles position. MSU also took No. 2 doubles as Rollins and Carlson were victorious over Kuzel and Gilbertson 8-2. In third doubles, the Dragon’s Anderson and Fuoss downed the Beaver’s Baird and Harrison 8-4.

The loss drops Bemidji State’s record to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in NSIC competition. The Beavers will return home for a double dip versus teams based out of Duluth, Minn. The team will battle the University of Minnesota-Duluth Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and face the College of St. Scholastica 1:00 p.m. Both matched will be played at the Gillette Recreation and Fitness Center.
