DULUTH, Minn. -A day after holding No. 25 North Dakota to one
goal in a 1-0 loss, the Bemidji State women’s
soccer team held Minnesota-Duluth scoreless in the first
half. However, the Bulldogs blew the game open with five
second-half goals, running away with a 5-0 win over BSU this
afternoon in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
opener for both programs.
Freshman goaltender Kari Torgerson survived a first-half
onslaught, saving all 10 shots on goal she faced out of 23
total Bulldog shots in the first half to lead BSU to a scoreless
tie at intermission.
But Nicole Fietz broke through for the Bulldogs in the 48th
minute, and that goal opened the floodgates. Duluth would
tack on three more goals over the next nine minutes as Cathy
Wallace (53rd minute), Rachael Ferrin (54th minute) and Kristine
Kruger (57th minute) would find the back of the net.
Jessica Arne added her fist goal of the season in the 75th
minute to complete scoring for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs dominated all areas of play. BSU managed just
two shots in the game - one in each half - while the Bulldogs
got off 36 shots against the Beavers. UMD’s five second-half
goals came on just 13 total shots. Minn.-Duluth also held
a 13-0 advantage in corner-kicks.
Torgerson finished with 14 saves for the game.
The loss dropped Bemidji State to 1-7-1, 0-1-0 in the NSIC,
while Minn.-Duluth evened its mark at 2-2-1. Bemidji State
is back in action Sept. 28 at Concordia-St. Paul.
