BEMIDJI, Minn. - Playing Minnesota State, Moorhead in back-to-back matches, the Bemidji State tennis team narrowly missed out on its first NSIC win against the Dragons with a 5-4 loss this afternoon at the Gillet Recreation and Fitness Center. MSU-M blanked the Beavers, 9-0 in the last meeting, just six days ago.

“ This was a huge improvement from last week’s 9-0 shutout,” said head coach Kari Wood. “I have to be happy about that. It is a good thing that we will see them (Moorhead) at the conference (tournament). It was good tennis all around.”

Junior Angie Harrison and freshman Breck Rolfsrud at No. 3 doubles took home an 8-0 blank of MSM’s Emily Burrows and Lisa Anderson; the first shutout for a BSU pair this season. Harrison and Rolfsrud ran their record together to 3-0 this season and own a combined 24-7 mark in their last 31 sets.

At the other BSU doubles win, senior Nikki Baird and sophomore Sherry Kuzel outlasted Miranda Quast and Tana Wagner, 8-6 at No. 2. Baird and Kuzel win for the first time in over a month and improve to 2-3 this season.

In singles action, junior Angie Harrison picked up her second win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Emily Burrows at No. 5. Also, Rolfsrud notched her team-leading fourth season win with a 6-4, 4-6, (10-7) escape of Jamie Lill at No. 2 singles.

Two of the four BSU singles losses came via the third-set tiebreaker after both Beavers won the first set.

The Beavers drop to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in NSIC competition this season. BSU will wrap up NSIC action with a double-header at Minnesota Duluth and SW Minnesota State, Apr. 3-4. The match against UM-D takes place Saturday at 3:00 p.m. while BSU squares off with the Mustangs on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
