BEMIDJI, Minn. - Despite holding a 2-1 lead
after one half of play, the Bemidji State soccer team dropped
its fourth match of the season Wednesday afternoon. The University
of Mary netted two goals in the second frame of the contest
to secure a 3-2 triumph over the Beavers.
The BSU offensive attack started quickly, as freshman
Christina
Hicks (Minnetonka, Minn.) chipped in her second marker
of the 2004 campaign off a sharp pass from sophomore
Katie
Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.) in the fifth minute
of the match. Meinhardt’s helper pushed her point total
to 23 on the season.
A moment of bad luck prompted Mary to tie the match at 1-1,
as BSU scored an own goal in the 16th minute.
Bemidji State regained the lead in the 42nd minute when sophomore
Ashley Lehmeier (Sartell, Minn.) scored her
fifth goal of the year off assists from sophomores
Nikki
Cleveland (Elk River, Minn.) and
Kari Torgerson
(New Hope, Minn.). The assist was the first of the season
for both players and the first career assist for Torgerson.
Kelly Green evened the score at 2-2 for the Marauders just
11 minutes into the second half. Freshman Becky Beall’s
laser of shot from close range in the 84th minute proved to
be the game-winning score for UM, as BSU was unable to muster
any further scoring in the match.
Mary compiled a 17-14 shot advantage on the day.
Torgerson stopped 10 shots in the loss for BSU, while Amanda
Marinovich made five saves for the visitors.
The Beavers fall to 7-4-0 overall and the Marauders improve
to 7-2-1. Bemidji State concludes non-conference competition
Sunday, Oct. 3 at home against St. Scholastica. The match
is set to start at 2 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Complex.
