Beavers Beat Finlandia 16-0 to Win St. Scholastica Advantage Cup Tournament

DULUTH, Minn. - In a week full of firsts, the Bemidji State women’s soccer team captured the first tournament title in its nine-year history with a 16-0 win over Finlandia Friday afternoon in the St. Scholastica Advantage Cup Tournament. One day after recording its first all-time victory against Minnesota-Duluth, the Beavers set a school record in goals with 16. The previous record for most goals scored in a game came on Oct. 1, 2002 when BSU tallied 10 markers in a 10-0 defeat of Wisconsin-Superior.

Although complete statistics were not available at the time of this release, sophomore Whitney Sengthao (Duluth, Minn.) led the way for the Beavers in the win, tallying a career-high three goals and two assists good for eight points. Sengthao’s eight-point performance equaled that of sophomore Katie Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.), who recorded four goals in Thursday’s 5-4 win over Minnesota-Duluth.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (New Hope, Minn.) stopped one shot and earned her first shutout of the season and the fifth of her career.

Head coach Jim Stone reflected on the success BSU had in the tournament.

“The best thing about the weekend was being able to bring home some hardware after winning the first tournament Bemidji State has ever won,” Stone said. “We have been working so hard and to be able to go in and beat Minnesota-Duluth yesterday and follow that up with a win is great.”

The win pushes BSU’s record to 2-2-0, marking the best four-game start in the history of the program. The Beavers will begin the home portion of their schedule on Sept. 8 against Mayville State (N.D.). The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Field.
