BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup with future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. A goal by the Marauders with just under five minutes to play sealed the fate for the Beavers.
The match was played on a cold, blustery afternoon in which the Beaver offensive attack couldn’t find a way to heat up. BSU managed to challenge University of Mary goalie Brannigan Coyle just two times in the 90-minute game, one of which came on a penalty kick.
After Marauder midfielder Danielle Mello took a header pass and beat BSU goaltender Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.), Mary held a one-goal advantage. Just two minutes later Bemidji State captain Erin Foss (Sr.; Bismarck, N.D.), who was playing in front of her hometown crowd, received a penalty kick opportunity. Foss made the most of the chance and scored her first goal of the season to knot at 1-1 in the 68th minute.
The Beaver defense and goaltending play of Torgerson and Jessica Meath (Fr.; Bethel, Minn.) kept the scored tied through a barrage of shots, until the 85th minute when BSU defenders were unable to clear a corner kick. Jessica Warmack rebounded the ball and snuck the eventual game-winner into the back of the net.
Meath picked up the loss for the Beavers, after spelling Torgerson for the second half, stopping five Marauder shots on goal, dropping her season record to 1-1-1 overall.
The loss halted a five-game unbeated streak for Bemidji State and dropped the team’s overall record to 7-3-3.
BSU returns to NSIC action this weekend on the road. The Beavers travel to play rivals Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday and Sunday. Bemidji State tied Wayne State and beat Southwest Minnesota State just two weeks ago. BSU will look to put a stronghold on their second place ranking in the NSIC.
