Box Score DULUTH, Minn. - The Bemidji State University
tennis team broke the seal on its 2005 season with a weekend
trip to Duluth, Minn. for a trio of dual events. After dropping
its first match 9-0 to host St. Scholastica, the team rebounded
to hand Hamline University an 8-1 loss. Saturday, the team
traveled across town to the University of Minnesota Duluth
where it was defeated 9-0 by its former NSIC rival Bulldogs.
The highlight of the weekend was the outstanding play of
the team versus Hamline. Newcomer Melissa Fogelson got things
started for the Beavers at the No. 1 singles slot. Fogelson
battled back from a 6-2 deficit in the first set to win the
second set 7-6 (7-5) in a tie-breaker and took the set with
a 10-7 score in the super-set tie-breaker.
"It was really nice to see Melissa battle back in what
was her debut weekend obn the team at No. 1 singles,"
said BSU Head Coach Kari Wood. "It really gives us something
to be excited about. I was very happy with our performance
overall."
Angie Harrison, Emily Berg and Kristen Lexcen each carried
the torch for BSU defeating their Hamline opponents in straight
sets in singles competition. At No. 2 Singles Hamline gained
its only point of the match when Hilary Wilson defeated BSU's
Sherry Kuzel 6-1, 6-2.
BSU made a clean sweep in doubles play winning each of the
three doubles matches. Holly Gilbertson and Harrison took
No. 1 Doubles 8-6, Kuzel and Fogelson won their No. 2 Doubles
match 8-4 while Emily Berg and Sarah Berg defeated their opponents
8-6 at No. 3 Doubles.
In doubles exhibition play, Hamline's Schumann and Munoz
defeated BSU's Emily Foster and Lexcen, 8-6.
BSU is 1-2 on the season and have yet to play their first
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match. The Beavers
will be back in action next weekend when they return to the
Gillette Recreation and Fitness Center to lift the lid on
their 2005 home season versus St. Cloud State. The match is
set for a 5:00 p.m. start on Friday.
