Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. - Strong play in top singles
positions was not enough to propel the Bemidji State University
tennis team to its second consecutive win over Concordia College,
Sunday, as the Cobbers took a 2-1 lead out of the doubles
competition and proceeded to gain wins in four singles matches
for a 6-3 team victory.
After dropping doubles matches at No.1 and No. 2, the BSU
pair of Emily Berg (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Sarah Berg (Bemidji, Minn.) battled CC's
No. 3 doubles team to a 9-8 victory winning the tie-breaker
7-3, salvaging a point for the Beavers' team total.
The singles competition started with a bang as the Beavers'
top two players garnered wins to take the lead in the match
3-2.
Melissa Fogelson (Bemidji, Minn.), after
losing the first set 6-1, came back to gain a victory in the
No. 1 spot taking the second set 7-6 (7-4) and win the tie-breaker
10-6. At No. 2 senior Sherry Kuzel (East
Grand Forks, Minn.) gained her first win of the season in
straight sets 6-4, 6-1. But unfortunately that was the extent
of BSU wins in singles competition as each of BSU's final
four singles players would drop their matches in straight
sets.
Four singles victories coupled with two points garnered in
doubles play gave Concordia College their first duel match
victory of 2005, 6-3.
"Having Angie [Harrison] out the past few matches has
really hurt us," said BSU head coach Kari Wood,
"but our girls played well. Sherry Kuzel showed great
skill and mental toughness shutting out her opponent."
Wood also added, Melissa [Fogelson] at No. 1 singles and our
No. 3 doubles team of Emily [Berg] and Sarah [Berg] played
from first set deficits to come back and win."
BSU falls to 4-9 on the season. The team will be back in
action Friday (March 25) when it host Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference rival Minnesota State University-Moorhead. The
match is set for BSU's Gillett Fitness/Recreation Center with
a 12:00 p.m. start.
