Beavers Drop 2005 Finale to Minnesota Duluth, 7-2

Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. - [box score] In its final match of the 2005 regular season, the Bemidji State University tennis team was defeated by former Northern Sun Intercollegiate foe the University of Minnesota Duluth, 7-2, Sunday at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center. Thought the Beavers got off to a promising start winning thier No. 1 doubles match, UMD bounced back to gain team points at No. 2 and 3 doubles and would take each of the top five singles spots, handing BSU its seventh consecutive loss of the season in decisive fashion.

In her first match since sustaining an injury March 6 versus Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Angie Harrison (Sr., Virginia, Minn.) teamed with Holly Gilbertson (Jr., Litchfield, Minn.) to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead defeating the Bulldog pair of Kara Skildum and Kim Hagedorn, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.

After the Bulldogs took each of the remaining doubles matches, the team continued its dominance as the singles competition got underway.

Sophomore Sarah Berg (Bemidji, Minn.) recorded BSU lone team point in singles competition defeating Andrea Mock. Winning the first set 7-5, Berg would need a 10-6 tie-breaker victory to win the match after mock took the second set 6-4.

"Our No. 1 doubles team was fantastic today," said BSU head coach Kari Wood. She added, " The team is ready for our conference tournament next weekend."

Originally slated to be played outdoors at the Bemidji High School, due to rain, the match was moved indoors to the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center. BSU has not hosted an outdoors match since 1999.

The 7-2 team victory for the Bulldogs marked the sixth consecutive victory over BSU. The Beavers have to look back to March 7, 1999 to find the last team win over UMD.

The Beavers fall to 4-14 overall and are 2-1 versus NSIC competition. The team travels to Winona, Minn. Friday to competing the 2005 NSIC Championships. The team is in search of its first league championship since the 1999 campaign.
