ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bemidji State soccer
team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Concordia-St.
Paul for the second consecutive meeting.
Mary Stoltz’s
late first half goal coupled with
Jessica Ploeger’s
second half game winner vaulted the Beavers to a win in their
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener.
The Golden Bears struck first early in the game with a goal
in the 2nd minute off the foot of Emily Grannes. The goal
was set up by a pass from teammate Sam Voeller. But, BSU goalkeeper
Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.) and
the defense tightened, not allowing another goal.
The Beaver offensive attack created an opportunity late in
the first half with Stolz striking the back of the net with
helpers from
Lauren Olivares (Fr.; El Paso,
Tex.) and
Emily Prall (So.; White Bear Lake,
Minn.). The goal came just nine seconds before halftime.
Early in the second half, BSU lit the scoreboard once again,
this time to take the lead for good. Passes from freshman
Kelly Hyvare (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and junior
Ashley Lehmeier (Sartell, Minn.) set up the
eventual game-winner for Ploeger (So.; Ramsey, Minn.).
After the initial CSP goal, Torgerson became a force in net
for the Beavers, denying 12 Golden Bear shots on goal. Torgerson’s
record improved to 2-1-1 on the season. The team record for
the Beavers has now climbed to 3-1-2.
Notes: The win was the second straight for the Beavers at
Concordia St. Paul, with the last coming in the first round
of last year’s NSIC tournament.... Concordia-St. Paul’s
goal was the first goal given up by a Beaver goalkeeper in
227:13 dating back to the Aug. 28 matchup with North Dakota....
The Beavers improve to 4-2-1 all-time versus the Golden Bears.
The Beavers six-game road swing continues tomorrow, September
11, 2005, with a match at 1:00 p.m. against reigning NSIC
regular season and conference tournament champions, Winona
State. The Beavers currently 2-0-1 on the road trip and will
