Beavers Battle Wayne State to Double Overtime Tie

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- In a hard fought game by both sides, Bemidji State got a goal from junior Katie Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.) with just 19 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 2-2 with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Wayne State College. The game continued through two overtimes without either team finding the net to end the game in a tie.

A physical game, which had 27 fouls called between the teams, started fast for Wayne State College. The Wildcats got on the board just five minutes into the game with a goal by Melissa Benson. BSU defenders were unable to clear a Wayne State corner kick and Benson found herself in the right position to beat Bemidji State goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.).

As the BSU defense dug in its collective heels to keep the Wildcat charge down, the offensive attack started to find its rhythm. In the 37th minute Christina Hicks (So.; Minnetonka, Minn.) lofted a pass over the heads of the WSC defense to find speedy freshman Kelly Hyvare (Coon Rapids, Minn.) on a breakaway. Hyvare controlled the ball and beat Wildcat goalie Jamie Anderson to tie the score, 1-1. The was Hyvare’s team-leading fifth of the season after also notching a score in yesterday’s game.

As the match wore on, each defense proved to be on it’s game until Wayne State’s Casie Beaman picked up a loose ball from a Wildcat shot and gave her team the lead 2-1 with a goal in the 87th minute.

With under three minutes to play in the game the BSU charge started to pressure the opponent defense upfield. As the clock rolled under 30 seconds defender Tegan Moehn picked off a Wildcat pass and sent the ball through the defense to forward Katie Meinhardt who raced up field and put the ball in the back of the net with 19 seconds remaining. Meinhardt’s third goal of the season, which knotted the game at 2-2, came in just her fifth game played this year after sitting out the first six with injuries.

The team’s played on into two overtimes in which the defenses shutdown their opponent’s attacks to end the game in a tie.

Torgerson collected 12 saves for BSU in the tie to move her record to 5-2-2 on the season.

The overall record for the Beavers this season moves to 6-2-3 and 4-1-1 in the NSIC. BSU remains unbeaten in its last four contests and seven of its last eight.

Next on the slate for Bemidji State is a home game Saturday, October 1, 2005 against the University of Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles. Last season the Beavers beat UMC 4-0 in the regular season finale in Crookston. With just one game on the schedule during the weekend ,BSU has a mid-week travel date on October 4, 2005 at the University of Mary in Bismack, N.D.
