FAYETTE, Iowa - Bemidji State scored three different ways getting goals via penalty kick, corner kick, and through the regular offense along with a perfect performance from All-American Kari Torgerson (Sr., GK, New Hope, Minn.) in net to blank Upper Iowa University 3-0 in the teams’ inaugural Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.
Torgerson stopped all eight shots she faced from the Peacock offense to gather her fourth solo shutout of the season. She has 4.5 shutouts after sharing time with backup Jessica Meath in a game earlier this season.
The BSU offense was just as effective getting a goal from NSIC scoring leader Kelly Hyvare (So., F, Coon Rapids, Minn.) in the 16th minute. Hyvare’s goal marked the 12th of the season and school-record fifth game-winner. Hyvare and Katie Meinhardt (Sr., F, Maple Grove, Minn.) shared the previous record of four.
Meinhardt and team assists leader Christina Hicks (Jr., M, Minnetonka, Minn.) each collected an assist on Hyvare’s goal. It was the first helper of the year for Meinhardt and sixth of the season for Hicks.
In the second half, BSU pushed the lead out of reach with a penalty kick goal from freshman Danielle Egeberg (M, New Hope, Minn.) and a goal off a corner kick by sophomore forward Lauren Olivares (El Paso, Texas).
Egeberg collected her second net-finder of the season, and Olivares got her third of the year.
The Beavers improved their record to 9-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the NSIC.
They will be back on the field tomorrow against NSIC-leading Winona State in a game at Midwest Wireless Stadium in Winona, Minn. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
