score] The Bemidji State University tennis team got a
win from freshman
Kali Welu (Pequot Lakes,
Minn.) at the No. 2 singles spot, but was unable to generate
any additional team scoring dropping a 8-1 loss to the University
of Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness
Center.
In just the third singles match of her collegiate career,
Welu continued her perfect record adding a win to improve
to 3-0. After dropping the first set 3-6 to the Bulldogs'
Kara Skildum, the freshman bounced back to take the second
set 6-2 and garner the victory with a 10-2 tie-breaker.
Unfortunately Minnesota Duluth overpowered the Beavers at
ever other singles position while starting singles play up
three points after sweeping the three doubles matches. The
Bulldogs cruised to the 8-1 victory.
The loss marks the seventh consecutive match the Bulldogs
have taken from the Beavers dating back to March 7, 1999.
The Beavers fall to 0-3 overall and are 0-2 versus NSIC competition.
The team wraps up its current three-match homestand tomorrow
when it faces Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe
Winona State University in an 8 a.m. sunrise start at the
Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.
