score] The Bemidji State University tennis team broke
the seal on its 2006 season Saturday dropping a 7-2 decision
at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Minnesota State
University-Moorhead. The Beavers' shot at a victory was still
with in reach after the singles matches had completed as they
trailed MSUM 4-2, but the Dragons took all three doubles points
to push though to take the match.
Newcomer Kali Welu (Fr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.)
earned the Beavers their first point of the day at No. 2 singles
when she used a second set tie-breaker to defeat Alyssa Schafer
in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (10-8). Kristen Lexcen
(So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) followed suit dropping MSUM's Beth
Helgeson at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-4.
But that was all the team scoring BSU would do on the day
as MSU-Moorhead took the final three singles matches and each
doubles contest in straight sets.
"Overall, I was pleased with out effort stated,"
BSU head coach Tom Hokanson. "Kristen
used her power to earn a victory while Kali displayed her
consistency to win her match."
The match marked the first for BSU under Hokanson. He replaces
Kari Wood who served as the team's mentor
for the previous three seasons.
The Beavers fall to 0-1 overall and are 0-1 versus NSIC competition.
The team returns home tomorrow to face the same MSU-Moorhead
team, this time on its own courts. The match is set to begin
at 1:00 p.m. at BSU's Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.
