score] For the second consecutive day the Bemidji State
University tennis team was pitted against Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference foe Minnesota State University-Moorhead and despite
the change in venue the outcome was the same as the Dragons
defeated the Beavers by the score of 7-2 Sunday at the Gillett
Fitness/Recreation Center.
BSU got out to an early lead for the second straight day,
garnering points at both of the top two singles positions.
Junior Melissa Fogelson (Bemidji, Minn.)
earned her first singles victory of the young 2006 season
taking the No. 1 slot with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rose Milless
and at No. 2 singles, newcomer Kali Welu
(Fr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) took her match versus's Alyssa
Schafer in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to improve to 2-0 in her
collegiate career.
But the Beavers were unable to generate any additional team
points in either the remainder of the singles matches or any
of the three doubles matches as the Dragons swept the remaining
seven points to gain the 7-2 victory.
At the conclusion of the day, BSU head coach Tom
Hokanson commented "Melissa really took charge
of her match to gain a win today while Kali continued her
consistent play to win her second consecutive match."
The Beavers fall to 0-2 overall and are 0-2 versus NSIC competition.
The team continues its current three-match homestand next
weekend. Saturday the team will battle former NSIC rival University
Minnesota Duluth at 11 a.m. while it will turn around to face
Winona State University bright and early Sunday morning. That
NSIC match is set for an 8:00 a.m. start at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness
Center.
