BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State’s Kelly Hyvare shook free for a goal in the 87th minute, but it marked the only goal of the day in a 3-1 loss to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Wayne State. The Wildcats posted two first half goals, and added another midway through the second half to put the game out of reach.
The Wildcats peppered Bemidji State goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Sr., New Hope, Minn.) with 18 shots in the contest, including 13 on goal. Torgerson turned away 10 of the 13 shots she faced, giving up three goals in a game for the first time since the Beavers season-opening loss at North Dakota.
WSC’s Jenna Pendley got things started for her offense with a goal from 20 yards, just over the outstretched hand of Torgerson. Elise Lane added a second first half goal and Katie Kelley put a header in the net off a free kick from teammate Sarah James in the second half.
Bemidji State’s offense, on the other hand, had its share of chances, but only Hyvare found the back of the net.
In the 87th minute, Maddie Pletta (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) recovered the ball after a scramble in front of the Wayne State net and feathered a pass to Hyvare, who didn’t miss from close range.
Just before Hyvare’s goal, BSU had one of their best chances on a high-lofted pass to the forehead of Danielle Uphoff (Fr., Brainerd, Minn.). Uphoff put herself in perfect position only a few yards from the net, but her header went of the left post.
The Beavers gave the Wayne State defense a scare hitting the post three times in the game, but each one bounced helplessly off to the side only to be cleared out.
Torgerson took the loss in net for BSU, dropping her record to 3-3 on the season.
Bemidji State’s overall record fell to 4-4 and 1-1 in the NSIC.
The Beavers will be back on the road next weekend in NSIC action. On Saturday, they travel to Minnesota State-Moorhead to take on the Dragons at 11 a.m. The next day, they travel to Concordia-St. Paul for a 1 p.m. game.
