Box Score 2 BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Beaver’s tennis team was
unable to pick up their first win on the season as they were defeated
in all three of their matches this past weekend in Duluth, Minn.
The
Beavers started out their weekend on Saturday night against the College
of St. Scholastica Saints and were defeated by a score of 0-9. The team
of Kali Welu (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and Sheila Hoberg (Bismarck, N.D.)
saw trouble at the No. 1 doubles position as they were defeated by the
team of Jess Rich and Lindsey Shoden by a score of 2-8.
Sunday
started with Bemidji State playing against the University of South
Dakota Coyotes and seeing more success than the previous night as the
No. 2 doubles team of Julie Kapsner (Pierz, Minn.) and Amy Erickson
(Roseau, Minn.) stayed with the team of Amanda Barton and Rachel Kludt
but where defeated by a score of 5-8. The No. 2 singles spot saw Welu
give Maggie Peters all she could handle as she forced a first set
tiebreaker which was won by Peters 7-4 giving her the first set victory
7-6. Peters was later able to win the second set 6-2 giving her the
win. Kapsner stayed competitive in the No. 4 singles spot puting up
scores of 4-6, 3-6 to Barton. The Coyotes came away with the victory
against the Beavers by a score of 9-0.
The
second match of the day saw the Beavers face off against the University
of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The last time they met was the season
opener for the Beavers back on February 4th which saw Duluth pull away
with an 8-1 victory. Sunday saw the same outcome for the Beavers as
they lost to the Bulldogs by a score of 0-9. A lineup change by coach
Scott Sorenson saw Welu get her first action on the season at the No. 1
singles spot but found the change tough as she was defeated by the
Bulldogs Anna Hockett 6-0, 6-2 victory.
The
Beavers record now stands at 0-7 (0-2; NSIC) on the season. The Beavers
will return to action on April 1st as they travel to Moorhead to take
on the University of Minnesota Moorhead Dragons with the match
scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
