Bemidji, Minn. - The recent success at home for the Bemidji State soccer team was stifled Saturday by the University of Mary.
The
defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament champions
got on the board early and held on to notch a 3-0 victory against the
Beavers at the BSU Soccer Field.
Jessica
Janusz scored in the fourth minute to give U-Mary a quick advantage.
She later assisted a goal by Megan Wilson in the 40th minute. That goal
came after a shot that was saved by the BSU goalkeeper Jessica Meath
(Jr., Bethel, Minn.) Meath knocked the initial shot in the air, and
Janusz was able to hit the rebound over to Wilson who scored the goal.
U-Mary
scored again in the second minute of the second half when Alyssa
Deutscher took a shot that caromed off the top of the goalpost and came
right back to her. She proceeded to take the rebound and knock the shot
past Meath to give the Marauders the final 3-0 score.
Kelly Hyvare (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the charge for BSU with four shots in the contest. Lauren Olivares (Jr., El Paso, Texas) had two shot attempts, and Ashlee Ellefsen (Fr., Hugo, Minn.), Sara Susick (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and Megan Wallner (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) each attempted one shot.
Meath
was tested throughout the game, gathering nine saves while giving up
the three goals. Brannigan Coyle had four saves and earned the win in
net for UM.
U-Mary (5-3-0) outshot Bemidji
State 8-7 in the first half, but turned up the defense in the second
half to outshoot the Beavers 12-2. The Marauders also had the advantage
in corner kicks 7-2.
The loss dropped BSU to 4-4-1 on the season, and ended the recent three-game home winning streak.
Bemidji
State will be looking to get back on track as the Beavers wrap up
non-conference play Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Northern State
University at the BSU Soccer Field.
