ST. PAUL, Minn. -
Ashlee Ellefsen
(So., Hugo, Minn.) notched her team-leading ninth goal of the year, but
it wasn’t enough as the Bemidji State University soccer team
dropped a crucial game 2-1 to Concordia University-St. Paul Saturday
afternoon.
The Golden Bears struck first when Sam Voeller notched her first goal of the season in the ninth minute of action.
Both
teams only managed one shot on goal in the first half, but it was
CU’s shot that found the back of the net and gave the team an
early advantage.
It took BSU 10 minutes into
the second period to answer, when Ellefsen scored a rebound goal off a
blocked shot in front of the net to tie the game at one.
Unfortunately for the road squad, this would not be its day.
CU
(6-8, 3-4 NSIC) notched a game-winning goal in the 73rd minute when
Lauren Nelson scored an unassisted marker after a scrap in front of the
net.
The Beavers outshot the Bears 11-10, but attempted one less corner kick, 3-2.
Goalkeeper Samantha Ross (So., Stillwater, Minn.) saved eight shots but gave up the two goals to fall to 8-5 on the season.
With
the loss, Bemidji State falls to 8-5 on the season and just 2-5 in
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. With just six conference
games remaining in the season, it’s going to take a couple win
streaks for the green and white to see postseason action. BSU now sits
in 11th place and only the top eight go to the NSIC Tournament.
The
Beavers are in dire need of a victory Sunday if they want to have any
chance of making a trip to the conference tourney at seasons’
end. BSU will face off against St. Cloud State University with a
gametime of 1 p.m.
